Dehydration is the process of losing body water, whereas hypernatremia and hyponatremia describe abnormally high and low blood sodium concentrations, respectively. Therefore, dehydration is not automatically the same as hypernatremia.
The Mechanism
Blood sodium concentration depends on the balance between sodium and water, not simply the total amount of sodium in the body. The normal concentration is approximately .
| Condition | Definition | Typical exercise-related cause |
|---|---|---|
| Dehydration | The process of losing body water; the resulting state is hypohydration | Sweating without sufficient fluid replacement |
| Hypernatremia | Blood sodium concentration above approximately |
