What Is the Definition of a Business?

A business is an organization that uses inputs to produce goods or services that satisfy customers’ needs or wants. It operates by adding value, but it does not necessarily exist only to earn profit.

How a business works

In IB Business Management subtopic 1.1 What is a business? (SL and HL), the nature of business is studied at AO1, so students must know and state its precise meaning.

A business combines inputs, such as human resources, finance, raw materials and information, through business processes. These inputs are transformed into outputs: goods or services offered to customers.

The mechanism can be summarized as:

  1. Identify a customer need or want.
  2. Acquire and organize inputs.
  3. Transform inputs through production or service delivery.
  4. sell the resulting goods or services.
  5. Create added value, meaning the difference between the selling price and the cost of purchased inputs.

For example, a bakery buys flour, yeast and other ingredients for \2,thenusesemployees,equipmentandexpertisetoproducebreadsoldfor, then uses employees, equipment and expertise to produce bread sold for ,thenusesemployees,equipmentandexpertisetoproducebreadsoldfor$5.Theaddedvalueis. The added value is .Theaddedvalueis$5-$2=$3.Thisdoesnotmeanthebakeryearns. This does not mean the bakery earns .Thisdoesnotmeanthebakeryearns$3$ profit, because other costs, such as wages, rent and energy, must still be deducted.

Businesses may pursue different objectives, including profit, growth, survival, social impact or sustainability. The common misconception that “all businesses exist only to maximize profit” is therefore incorrect. For-profit enterprises usually seek financial returns, while social enterprises balance commercial activity with social or environmental objectives.

Exam technique

For a define question, give the precise meaning in one concise sentence; an example alone is insufficient. A strong answer should identify an organization, the transformation of inputs into goods or services, and the satisfaction of customer needs or wants. Avoid defining a business simply as “a company that makes money,” because this excludes non-profit and social-purpose organizations and does not explain the core business activity.
