Treat creationism versus evolution as a debate about biblical interpretation, religious authority and the relationship between scientific and religious explanations. Do not present all Christians as creationists or assume that accepting evolution requires rejecting Christianity.
The Reasoning
In IB World Religions, this issue belongs primarily to Christianity's doctrines and beliefs, particularly cosmogony and cosmology. Begin with Genesis 1-2, then explain that Christian groups interpret these accounts differently.
| Approach | Interpretation and implications |
|---|---|
| Young-earth creationism | Some Fundamentalist Protestants read Genesis largely literally and believe that God created the world in six days. They may reject evolutionary explanations that conflict with this reading. |
| Old-earth or progressive creationism | Some Christians accept scientific evidence for an ancient universe but maintain that God intervened directly at important stages of creation. |
| Theistic evolution | Many Christians accept evolution as the process through which God creates. The Roman Catholic Church, for example, generally regards evolutionary science as compatible with belief in God as Creator, while maintaining theological teachings about humanity. |
Develop the connection between interpretation and authority. A literalist may emphasize the Bible's direct authority, whereas Christians using biblical criticism may understand Genesis as theological or symbolic literature explaining that creation depends on God, rather than as a scientific account.
The common misconception is that the debate has only two positions: Christianity or evolution. This is incorrect because many Christians distinguish between science answering how life developed and theology addressing meaning, purpose and dependence on God.
Exam Technique
For a Paper 2 answer, define the competing interpretations, use named denominational examples, and evaluate whether creationism and evolution must conflict. A strong conclusion should follow from the evidence, perhaps arguing that the degree of conflict depends mainly on how biblical authority and Genesis are interpreted. Avoid unsupported phrases such as “Christians believe”; specify the denomination, interpretive approach, culture or geographical setting.
