Before visiting a place of worship, establish your academic purpose, obtain permission where required, and check the community’s expectations for visitors. Respect worshippers’ privacy and distinguish what you observe from how adherents explain its religious significance.
Prepare for a Respectful Visit
In IB World Religions SL, visits support the study of insider and outsider approaches. An insider understands a religion through belonging and lived experience; an outsider studies it without necessarily sharing its beliefs. Neither perspective automatically provides a complete or unbiased account.
Choose a focused question, such as how communal worship expresses religious identity. Undertake preliminary research so that you can recognize relevant beliefs and practices without assuming that every community follows the same customs.
| Consideration | What to Check Before Visiting |
|---|---|
| Access and timing | Confirm opening times, visitor arrangements, accessibility, and whether services or particular areas are restricted. |
| Dress and conduct | Ask about modest clothing, head coverings, footwear, seating, silence, and phone use. Requirements vary between communities. |
| Participation | Establish whether visitors may observe or join particular activities. Do not assume every ritual is open to non-adherents. |
| Research ethics | Obtain permission before recording, photographing, interviewing, or quoting anyone. Explain your academic purpose and protect confidentiality. |
| Internal diversity | Identify the denomination or school and the cultural and geographical context of the community. |
Interpret What You Observe
For example, a Sikh gurdwara, a place where the Guru Granth Sahib is installed, may welcome visitors to langar, a freely available communal meal. Ask how participants understand its connection to equality and sewa, altruistic service, rather than treating it simply as food provision.
A common misconception is that one visit represents an entire religion. It represents a particular community at a particular time; compare observations with adherents’ explanations and reliable sources.
IB Application
For an investigative study, connect observations to your research question and evaluate your method’s limitations. Strong analysis explains belief-to-practice connections while acknowledging your assumptions and the perspectives of those you consulted.
