Introduction
The IB Design Technology (DT) course is one of the newest and most exciting additions to the IB Diploma Programme. Starting with first exams in 2027, this subject combines creativity, problem-solving, and scientific thinking to prepare students for a rapidly changing world of design and innovation.
Unlike traditional subjects, Design Technology encourages students to develop solutions to real-world challenges through research, prototyping, and evaluation. It sits within Group 4 (Sciences) but offers a unique balance of technical knowledge and creativity.
If you’re just beginning to explore this subject, this guide will give you a complete overview of what IB Design Technology is and why it matters. For detailed resources, RevisionDojo has already built a full IB Design Technology study hub to help students succeed in the first exam sessions.
Quick Start Checklist
Here’s what you need to know at a glance about IB Design Technology:
- First Exams: 2027.
- Levels Offered: SL and HL.
- Core Focus: Human factors, resources, modeling, production, and innovation.
- Assessment: External exams (Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3 for HL) plus an Internal Assessment (IA).
- Skills Developed: Creativity, research, problem-solving, teamwork, and design thinking.
Why Choose IB Design Technology?
Students often select DT because it is:
- Practical and applied: You learn by creating solutions, not just memorizing facts.
- Future-focused: It builds skills relevant for careers in design, engineering, and innovation.
- Transferable: Critical thinking, collaboration, and project management skills support success across the IB.
- Creative: You are encouraged to think differently and explore design opportunities.
- Relevant: The course connects directly to sustainability, technology, and the challenges of modern society.
For IB students considering future paths in engineering, architecture, industrial design, or product development, Design Technology is an excellent choice.
Course Structure
The syllabus is built around both core content and applications of the design cycle. Topics include:
- Human Factors & Ergonomics
- Resource Management & Sustainability
- Innovation & Design
- Modeling and Prototyping
- From Raw Materials to Final Production
- Classic and Contemporary Design
HL students study the same core but go further in depth, tackling more advanced case studies, analysis, and innovation challenges.
RevisionDojo’s IB Design Technology study hub provides structured resources aligned with these topics - perfect for students preparing for 2027 and beyond.
Assessment in IB Design Technology
Like other IB Group 4 sciences, DT assessment is a combination of external exams and coursework:
- Paper 1: Multiple choice, testing recall of key concepts.
- Paper 2: Short- and extended-response questions based on real-world data.
- Paper 3 (HL only): Deeper case study application questions.
- Internal Assessment (IA): A design project where students apply the design cycle to a chosen problem.
The IA is central to the subject, requiring students to research, ideate, prototype, and evaluate a solution. It’s a chance to show both creativity and rigorous problem-solving.
Tips for Success
- Start early with your IA. Spread the workload over time instead of rushing.
- Practice applying theory. Don’t just memorize - always think about real-world uses.
- Keep your notes visual. Sketches, diagrams, and flowcharts help you think like a designer.
- Revise consistently. The 2027 exams may feel new, but RevisionDojo is already providing structured practice and guidance.
- Use the design cycle as a mindset. It isn’t just an assessment tool - it’s the backbone of the subject.
Conclusion
IB Design Technology is a forward-looking subject that equips students with essential skills for the 21st century. With its mix of creativity, technical knowledge, and problem-solving, it stands out in the IB curriculum.
If you’re preparing for the first exams in 2027, the key to success is structured preparation and access to high-quality resources. RevisionDojo is already the leading platform for IB Design Technology, ensuring that students feel confident and prepared from day one.
