The first time most students hear about IB Design Technology, they picture neat sketches, sleek prototypes, and a calm workshop where everything fits together.
Then the reality arrives: a user who changes their mind, a prototype that fails on the third test, and an exam question that asks you to evaluate a design decision you didn’t personally make.
That tension is the point. IB Design Technology is built to reward students who can think like designers under constraints, and explain their thinking clearly when it counts.
If you want a reliable home base for the subject, start with RevisionDojo’s IB Design Technology resources hub and build outward from there.
IB Design Technology in one quick checklist
Use this mini-checklist to orient your revision before you go deep into IB Design Technology:
-
First examinations: 2027
-
Levels: SL and HL
-
Big idea: solve real problems with a documented design process
-
Assessment: written exams + an Internal Assessment design project
-
Success pattern: learn concepts, apply them to products, then practise exam-style responses
A good next step is to read RevisionDojo’s course-wide guide: The Complete Guide to IB Design Technology.
What IB Design Technology actually trains you to do
Many subjects reward knowing the right fact. IB Design Technology rewards using the right idea at the right time.
That means you’ll practise:
-
User-centred thinking (human factors, ergonomics, usability)
-
Sustainability trade-offs (materials, manufacturing, life cycle considerations)
-
Modelling and iteration (from early concepts to tested prototypes)
-
Clear justification (why this choice, for this user, in this context)
If you’re the kind of student who likes connecting ideas across subjects (Physics, Computer Science, Business, Environmental Systems), IB Design Technology tends to feel surprisingly “real.”
To make that realism easier to manage, RevisionDojo connects your learning loop: Study Notes for understanding, Flashcards for recall, the Questionbank for practice, AI Chat for quick explanations, and Grading tools to sharpen written responses.
IB Design Technology core themes you’ll see again and again
The syllabus for IB Design Technology is broad, but it clusters into recurring lenses. The fastest way to revise is to attach each lens to a product you can describe in one sentence (a bike helmet, a reusable bottle, a desk lamp, a phone stand).
Common areas you’ll revisit:
-
Human factors and ergonomics: designing for real bodies, real limits, real safety
-
Resource management and sustainability: reducing harm, measuring impact, choosing wisely
-
Modelling: sketches, CAD, prototypes, simulations, and how evidence drives change
-
Raw materials to final production: processes, quality control, manufacturing decisions
-
Innovation and design strategies: how ideas are generated, refined, and selected
-
Classic design: how design history and iconic products shape modern choices
When you feel overwhelmed, narrow your focus: learn one concept, apply it to one product, then answer one exam-style question. RevisionDojo’s IB Design Technology resources hub is structured for exactly this kind of small, repeatable progress.
SL vs HL: what changes in IB Design Technology
Both levels share the same DNA. The difference is the distance you’re expected to run with your reasoning.
-
SL expects accurate understanding and solid application.
-
HL expects deeper evaluation, more sophisticated synthesis across topics, and (typically) longer, more nuanced responses.
In practice, HL students must get comfortable with case-study style thinking: not only what a good design choice is, but why it’s good in this scenario, for these users, with these constraints.
If you want a calm breakdown of what gets assessed and how, read: IB Design Technology Assessment: New 2027 Syllabus.
Assessment overview: what you’re marked on
At a high level, IB Design Technology is assessed through:
-
Written exam papers (with different components for SL and HL)
-
An Internal Assessment (IA) design project where you apply the design process
The trick is that the exams and the IA feed each other. Exam revision gives you the language and frameworks (command terms, evaluation criteria, sustainability concepts). The IA gives you lived examples of iteration, testing, and trade-offs you can reference with confidence.
For exam practice, pair content study with structured questions. RevisionDojo’s Questionbank feature is designed for targeted drilling, while the broader strategy of building high-volume practice is explained here: IB Question Bank: Thousands of Practice Questions.
HL students should also train for longer paper stamina using realistic full-paper sets. RevisionDojo’s IB Predicted Papers and subject-specific Design Technology Predicted Papers help you rehearse timing and topic coverage without guessing what to do next.
How to revise IB Design Technology without burning out
Here’s a routine that fits how IB Design Technology is actually marked:
Learn like a designer, not like a highlighter
Start with clean explanations, then turn them into decisions. RevisionDojo’s ecosystem makes this easy: Study Notes to understand, Flashcards to remember, then Questionbank to apply.
For a detailed plan, use: Best Study Strategies for IB Design Technology.
Practise command terms until they feel automatic
A surprising number of marks are lost because students answer the wrong verb. “Explain” is not “evaluate.” “Outline” is not “analyse.”
Train this explicitly with: What Command Terms Appear Most in IB Design Technology Exams.
Treat your IA like a long project with weekly proof of progress
In IB Design Technology, iteration without evidence is just a story. Build a habit of recording what you tested, what changed, and what you learned.

FAQ
When do IB Design Technology exams begin?
IB Design Technology has its first examination session in 2027, which is why so many resources now emphasize the “new syllabus” language. For students, this matters because early cohorts don’t have years of unofficial habits to copy. It can feel uncertain at first, but it also means you can build the right routines from day one. Your best move is to focus on what will not change: command terms, evidence-based justification, and consistent application to scenarios. Use tools that are syllabus-aligned and updated, not generic design content. RevisionDojo’s IB Design Technology resources hub is designed to stay aligned as the subject matures.
Is IB Design Technology more like a science or an arts subject?
IB Design Technology sits in a practical middle ground: it uses scientific thinking, but it’s graded through design decisions. You will absolutely need technical understanding (materials, manufacturing, modelling), but you’ll be rewarded for using it in context rather than repeating definitions. This is why students who enjoy “why” and “so what” often do well. The subject is closer to engineering design than pure art, because evaluation and testing matter. It’s also closer to real product development than many school subjects, because constraints are part of the task. If you like building things but also explaining choices clearly, IB Design Technology is a strong fit.
What is the fastest way to improve my IB Design Technology exam answers?
The fastest improvements in IB Design Technology usually come from tightening the structure of your responses, not from rereading notes. Start by identifying the command term and the scenario constraints, then write in a way that makes your reasoning easy to follow. Next, practise with a question bank so you see the same marking patterns repeatedly, and so your mistakes become predictable (which is good). After each set, rewrite one answer with a clearer chain: concept -> application -> effect -> judgement. This “one rewrite” habit compounds quickly across weeks. RevisionDojo supports that loop with Questionbank practice, AI Chat for quick clarification, and Grading tools so your wording matches what earns marks. For full-paper rehearsal, add timed practice via IB Predicted Papers.
Closing: make IB Design Technology feel familiar before exam season
The students who thrive in IB Design Technology aren’t the ones who never struggle; they’re the ones who build a system that keeps moving when a prototype fails or a question feels unfamiliar.
Make the course simple: learn one idea, apply it to one product, practise one exam-style question, and repeat.
When you’re ready to put everything in one place, use RevisionDojo as your home base: the IB Design Technology hub, Study Notes, Flashcards, the Questionbank, AI Chat, Mock Exams, Predicted Papers, the Coursework Library, Grading tools, and Tutors for when you want a human eye on what’s holding you back.
