How to Manage Your Time in IB English Exams (Paper 1 & Paper 2)
Time pressure is one of the biggest challenges in IB English. Many students know the content but lose marks because they rush, overwrite early, or fail to finish strong conclusions. Success in IB English isn’t about writing faster—it’s about controlling your time with precision.
This guide shows how to pace yourself confidently in Paper 1 and Paper 2, from the first reading minute to the final sentence.
1. Understand the Time Demands of Each Paper
Each IB English paper tests different skills—and requires a different pacing strategy.
Paper 1 (Unseen Text Analysis)
You must analyze a text you’ve never seen before, balancing interpretation with close language analysis.
Paper 2 (Comparative Essay)
You are tested on depth of understanding, comparison, and argument structure using studied texts.
Because the demands are different, your time strategy must change accordingly.
2. Build a Fixed Time Framework Before the Exam
Never decide your pacing during the exam. Go in with a clear plan.
Recommended Time Breakdown
Paper 1 (1 hour total)
- Reading and annotation: 15–20 minutes
- Planning: 5 minutes
- Writing: 30–35 minutes
- Proofreading: 5 minutes
Paper 2 (1 hour 45 minutes)
- Planning: 10 minutes
- Writing body paragraphs: 80–85 minutes
- Proofreading and refining: 10 minutes
Stick to these limits strictly. Overwriting early almost always causes rushed endings.
