Understanding IB English Paper 2
IB English Paper 2 is a comparative literary essay based on one question chosen from a set provided in the exam. You must compare at least two literary works studied during the course, at either Standard Level or Higher Level.
Key features of Paper 2:
- Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes
- Task: A comparative essay responding directly to a thematic, character-based, or technique-based question
- Focus: Depth of analysis, comparison, and literary understanding rather than memorization
Success in Paper 2 depends on planning, clarity of argument, and sustained comparison throughout the essay.
Step 1: Planning Your Comparative Essay
Spend the first 5–10 minutes planning. This time is critical and often determines the quality of your response.
Effective planning includes:
- Choosing works that offer clear points of comparison or contrast in relation to the question
- Writing a focused thesis that directly answers the question and establishes a comparative angle
- Sketching a brief structure that ensures balanced treatment of both texts
Avoid vague plans. A strong plan already contains your argument, not just topics.
Step 2: Writing an Introduction With Purpose
Your introduction should do more than summarize the texts.
A strong introduction:
- Briefly contextualizes both works
- Identifies the central idea or issue raised by the question
- Presents a clear comparative thesis indicating how and why the texts differ or align
