The best IB ESS resources combine four functions: accurate syllabus coverage, active recall, exam-style practice, and reliable real-world evidence. No single textbook or website does all four equally well, so independent students should build a small resource stack rather than collect dozens of disconnected materials.

For the current Environmental Systems and Societies course, begin with official IB documentation, choose one current textbook or digital course, and add a question bank plus authoritative environmental data sources. Make sure every resource covers the syllabus introduced for first teaching in 2024 and first assessment in 2026, including both SL and HL where relevant.

Check that resources match the current IB ESS syllabus

ESS is now available at standard level and higher level. The current course contains eight numbered topics, from foundations through human populations and urban systems, while HL students also study environmental law, environmental and ecological economics, and environmental ethics.

The official IB ESS subject brief is the quickest reliable overview. The IB also provides a useful explanation of the syllabus and assessment changes.

Resource alignment matters because older ESS materials were written for an SL-only course. They can still explain enduring concepts such as succession, productivity, environmental value systems, and pollution management, but they do not fully cover the present HL content or revised assessment expectations.

Environmental databasesCurrent case studies and dataInformation must be converted into exam-ready notes

1. Official IB materials

Official materials should be the foundation of IB ESS self-study because they define what can be assessed. Use the subject brief to map the topics, distinguish SL from HL, and understand the weighting of each assessment component.

Under the current model, Paper 1 uses data connected to a previously unseen case study. Paper 2 combines short-answer and data-based questions with structured essays. The individual investigation has a maximum overall word count of 3,000 words and contributes 25% at SL or 20% at HL.

The IB publishes a sample examination papers page, while schools can access further specimen papers, markschemes, subject reports, and teacher support material through official IB systems.

Pros

  • Definitive source for syllabus and assessment rules
  • Accurate terminology, weightings, and paper formats
  • Specimen materials show the intended style of the revised course

Cons

  • The public subject brief is an overview rather than a textbook
  • Some detailed resources are available primarily through schools or the IB store
  • Official documents explain expectations but do not provide a complete revision programme

2. A current ESS coursebook

A coursebook is the best primary teaching resource when you are learning independently. It provides a planned sequence, detailed explanations, diagrams, examples, practical activities, and links among ecological science, social systems, economics, ethics, and policy.

Current options include the Oxford ESS Course Book, the Pearson IB Diploma ESS course, and the Hodder ESS coursebook. All three publishers offer materials aligned with the revised course, but students should still check the edition and publication details before buying.

Do not read a coursebook passively from beginning to end. After each subtopic, close the book and reconstruct the process, system diagram, or argument from memory. Then answer questions without looking at the chapter.

Pros

  • Strongest option for complete, sequential content learning
  • Detailed explanations are helpful when no teacher is available
  • Current editions distinguish SL and HL material

Cons

  • A full coursebook can be expensive and lengthy
  • Reading alone creates familiarity rather than reliable recall
  • One book rarely supplies enough timed practice or feedback

3. RevisionDojo ESS resources

RevisionDojo is particularly useful for self-study because its tools cover several stages of the learning cycle in one place. The IB ESS resource hub follows the current syllabus and separates resources by topic.

Use the ESS Study Notes to clarify a concept, then test retrieval with Flashcards. Move quickly to the ESS Questionbank, recording whether each error came from missing knowledge, weak data interpretation, misuse of a command term, or insufficient evaluation.

Closer to the examination, ESS Predicted Papers can supplement official specimen and past-paper practice. Predicted papers are practice materials, not forecasts of exact examination questions, so they should be used to rehearse timing and unfamiliar applications rather than to guess content.

For coursework, the step-by-step ESS IA guide explains research questions, variables, data collection, analysis, and evaluation. Jojo AI can clarify difficult concepts or question feedback, but students should verify its explanations and must not use it to produce work submitted as their own.

Pros

  • Integrates notes, flashcards, questions, feedback, and timed practice
  • Supports targeted revision by syllabus topic
  • Useful for identifying weaknesses without waiting for teacher marking

Cons

  • AI feedback remains provisional and requires critical checking
  • Students can mistake completing digital activities for genuine mastery
  • Some advanced features may depend on the selected plan

4. Kognity

Kognity’s IB ESS digital book combines course content with quizzes, progress checks, and interactive features. It suits students who prefer shorter digital sections to long textbook chapters.

Its main difficulty for independent learners is access. Kognity is commonly supplied through schools, so an individual student may not be able to use it unless their school has a licence.

Pros

  • Interactive and structured around IB learning
  • Built-in checks encourage regular retrieval
  • Progress features can reveal incomplete topics

Cons

  • Availability may depend on institutional access
  • Short digital explanations may need textbook supplementation
  • Quizzes do not replace extended-response practice

5. Save My Exams

The Save My Exams ESS collection provides revision notes, questions, model answers, and past-paper support. It is most effective after a topic has been learned, when concise summaries and worked responses can help consolidate knowledge.

Its notes should not become your only source. ESS rewards connections, perspectives, and evaluation, so highly compressed material must be supplemented with detailed case studies and practice constructing arguments.

Pros

  • Clear, concise presentation
  • Convenient combination of notes and practice
  • Helpful for rapid review before tests

Cons

  • Some access may be restricted by subscription
  • Summaries can oversimplify contested environmental issues
  • Students may copy model-answer structures without understanding them

6. Authoritative environmental data sources

ESS requires students to apply concepts to real environmental problems. Our World in Data offers accessible graphs and datasets on climate, energy, population, food, biodiversity, and pollution, while the UN Environment Programme data portal links to reports and environmental evidence.

Use these sources to build a case-study bank. For each example, record the location, issue, causes, environmental and social effects, management strategy, stakeholder perspectives, and an evidence-based judgment about effectiveness. Keep dates and units attached to statistics, since context-free numbers are difficult to use accurately.

Pros

  • Supplies current evidence for essays and evaluation
  • Develops the graph-reading skills required in Paper 1
  • Helps connect separate syllabus topics

Cons

  • Large datasets can overwhelm beginners
  • Not every interesting fact is relevant to an IB question
  • Students must check dates, definitions, scale, and methodology

How to combine the resources effectively

A productive weekly cycle is more valuable than switching constantly among websites:

  1. Map the subtopic against the official syllabus.
  2. Learn it from one current textbook or structured digital course.
  3. Condense it into definitions, systems diagrams, and a short case-study card.
  4. Retrieve it using flashcards or a blank-page summary.
  5. Apply it through data-based and extended-response questions.
  6. Review mistakes and repeat the weakest skill several days later.

Every two or three weeks, complete a mixed-topic Paper 1 exercise because the unseen case study can connect multiple areas of ESS. Practise Paper 2 essays separately, focusing on command terms, balanced perspectives, relevant examples, and a justified conclusion.

Common mistakes when choosing ESS resources

The first mistake is using an old-syllabus resource without checking what it omits. This is especially serious for HL students because the previous course did not contain the current HL lenses.

The second is collecting notes without answering questions. ESS examinations assess application, data analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, not just definitions. A student who knows the content but cannot interpret an unfamiliar graph or compare stakeholder perspectives remains underprepared.

Finally, do not treat model answers, predicted papers, or AI output as official IB authority. Use them to practise and obtain feedback, while checking formal requirements against current IB documentation and instructions from your school.

Conclusion

The best IB ESS resources form a balanced system. Official IB materials define the course, a current textbook teaches it in depth, question banks develop examination technique, and reliable databases supply evidence for case studies and evaluation.

For a connected self-study routine, RevisionDojo can bring together ESS Study Notes, Flashcards, the Questionbank, Jojo AI, IA support, and Predicted Papers. Start with the official syllabus and one strong content source, then use these tools to practise retrieval, application, and timed performance.
