Introduction: What Is the IB Diploma Programme?
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) is one of the world’s most rigorous and widely respected pre-university qualifications. Designed for students aged 16 to 19, the IB Diploma prepares learners not only for university study, but also for life beyond academics by emphasizing critical thinking, global awareness, and personal development.
Offered in more than 150 countries, the IB Diploma is recognized internationally and valued for its academic depth, balanced curriculum, and focus on independent learning.
What Is Included in the IB Diploma Programme?
To earn the IB Diploma, students must complete two main components: six academic subjects and the IB Core.
The Six Subject Groups
Students study six subjects across different disciplines, ensuring both breadth and depth.
Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature (Language A)
This focuses on literary analysis, communication skills, and critical interpretation.
Group 2: Language Acquisition (Language B)
Students learn a second language, emphasizing communication and cultural understanding.
Group 3: Individuals and Societies
Subjects such as History, Economics, Geography, Psychology, and Global Politics explore human behavior and societal structures.
Group 4: Sciences
Options include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Systems and Societies, with a strong emphasis on inquiry and experimentation.
Group 5: Mathematics
Students choose between Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI), depending on their strengths and goals.
Group 6: The Arts or an Additional Subject
Students may study an arts subject or replace it with an extra course from Groups 1–4.
The IB Core
In addition to academic subjects, all diploma candidates complete three core components that distinguish IB from many other curricula.
The Extended Essay (EE)
A 4,000-word independent research paper that develops academic writing, research skills, and critical thinking.
