What Is the IB Program and How Does It Work?
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a globally recognized two-year program for high school students aged 16–19. It’s built to develop well-rounded, critical thinkers who are prepared for university and beyond.
IB Program Highlights
- Six subject areas across languages, sciences, and humanities
- Core components:
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK) – philosophical thinking
- Extended Essay (EE) – independent research paper
- CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) – real-world impact
- Offered in over 150 countries and thousands of schools worldwide
Why Some People Think the IB Program Is a Scam
1. It’s Extremely Challenging
IB students often report high stress, burnout, and overwhelming workloads, leading some to question if it's worth it.
2. College Credit Isn’t Always Guaranteed
In some regions, especially the US, not all universities offer credit for IB subjects—particularly if scores aren’t high enough (usually 6 or 7 at HL).
3. It Can Be Expensive
In private or international schools, tuition for IB programs can run high. However, public schools often offer IB for free.
These factors may lead some to believe IB is a “scam” or overhyped.
