What Is a 45 in the IB Diploma Programme?
A 45 is the highest possible score in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) and represents near-perfect performance across the entire programme.
It is made up of:
- 42 points from six subjects, each graded on a scale of 1 to 7
- 3 bonus points from the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) combined
To score a 45, a student must earn top grades in every subject and secure the maximum bonus points from the core. There is no margin for error.
How Rare Is a 45 in IB?
A 45 is extremely rare.
Globally, only about 1–2 percent of IB students achieve a perfect score each year.
In a recent exam session, roughly 2,600 students out of around 180,000 candidates reached 45.
Students who score 45 are more commonly found in:
- Schools with strong IB teaching experience and internal support
- Students who completed the Middle Years Programme (MYP) or similar pre-IB preparation
- Subject combinations with multiple Higher Level courses and historically favorable grade boundaries
However, 45 scorers come from public and private schools across many countries.
Common Traits of Students Who Score 45
Students who achieve a 45 are not defined by raw intelligence alone. What they tend to share are habits and mindset.
Consistency
They work steadily throughout the two years rather than relying on last-minute revision.
Self-awareness
They understand how they learn best and seek help early when something is unclear.
Strategic use of resources
They actively use examiner reports, mark schemes, and assessment criteria to guide their preparation.
