A case study isn’t just a story you remember. In IB Geography, it’s a tool you use.
On exam day, the pressure isn’t about knowing more places than everyone else. It’s about retrieving the right place, fast, and turning it into evidence that matches the command term. Done well, IB Geography case studies quietly raise your markbands because they signal something examiners trust: specificity, real-world application, and evaluation.
Why IB Geography case studies lift your marks
In IB Geography, general claims are cheap. “Urbanisation causes congestion” gets you started, but it rarely finishes the job. Case studies add three scoring advantages.
First, they anchor concepts in place and time (named location + date). Second, they give you defensible evidence (a couple of stats go a long way). Third, they create space for evaluation (who benefited, who didn’t, what limits existed).

A quick checklist for case studies that actually perform
Before committing any IB Geography case study to memory, run this checklist:
-
15-second summary (what happened and why it matters)
-
Context (place, scale, timeline)
-
2-4 statistics (memorable and usable)
-
Impacts (social/economic/environmental)
-
Responses (short-term vs long-term where relevant)
-
One evaluation hook (a limitation, trade-off, or stakeholder conflict)
This structure matches the approach in IB Geography Case Studies: A Comprehensive Exam Guide and keeps your revision lean.
How to leverage IB Geography case studies in each paper
Paper 1 and Paper 2: evidence + evaluation, not description
Your case study should appear like a well-placed citation: brief context, a precise statistic, then a sentence explaining what it proves.
A practical habit: after each piece of evidence, add one evaluative line that begins with “However…” or “This was limited because…”. That single pivot often separates mid-level answers from high-band responses in IB Geography.
To sharpen this skill, practise alongside How to Analyze IB Geography Data Effectively so your evidence is interpreted, not just listed.
HL extension and IA thinking: treat your case studies like mini-investigations
Even when you’re not writing your IA, you can think like you did: scale, methods, reliability, and what the data can’t show. That mindset upgrades evaluation across IB Geography.
RevisionDojo makes this easier because you can move between Study Notes, Flashcards, and AI Chat inside the IB Geography Resources hub to keep your case study template consistent.
Practice drills that make case studies automatic
Case studies fail under pressure when they stay “notes” instead of becoming “responses.” Try this:
-
60-second outlines: pick a question, choose one case study, write only: context + 2 stats + evaluation.
-
Two-case comparisons: force contrast (different scales, different governance, different outcomes).
-
Timed exam simulation: use Best Geography Mock Exams for IB to train time-per-mark discipline.
On RevisionDojo, you can drill weak areas with the Questionbank, then test again with Mock Exams and Predicted Papers via IB Geography Predicted Papers or the broader IB Predicted Papers library.
Conclusion: turn IB Geography case studies into a marks engine
Case studies don’t raise scores because they’re impressive. They raise scores because they’re usable: quick context, a couple of sharp statistics, and one honest line of evaluation.
If you want your IB Geography case studies to show up on exam day, build them in a template, practise them under time, and get feedback fast. Start in the IB Geography Resources hub, then reinforce with RevisionDojo Flashcards, Questionbank, Study Notes, Grading tools, and Predicted Papers until retrieval feels automatic.
