Undertraining
Failing to give the body enough stimulus for performance to improve, by training too infrequently, for too short a time, or at too low an intensity to generate the physical adaptations needed.
A sprinter might perform multiple intense speed drills over several consecutive days without taking appropriate rest, leading to overreaching.
Overreaching
Short-term overloading that exceeds the body’s current capacity for recovery but does not result in long-term harm, usually due to an increase in intensity, duration, or frequency.
Overtraining syndrome
A condition caused by excessive training without adequate recovery, leading to fatigue, decreased performance, and increased injury risk.
A marathon runner who trains continuously without taking enough rest or altering their training programme may experience overtraining, leading to prolonged fatigue and reduced performance.
A common mistake is to confuse normal training fatigue with OTS. Most tired athletes need a deload week, better sleep, or a medical check, not an OTS diagnosis.
