Oxygen Accepts the Final Electrons, Keeping the Chain Running

The electron transport chain (ETC) passes electrons through a series of protein complexes.
Electrons must be removed at the end to keep the chain flowing.
Without a final acceptor, electrons would pile up and the chain would stop.
Oxygen is the terminal electron acceptor, taking electrons from the final carrier in the ETC.

Common Mistake

A common misconception is that oxygen is used directly to make ATP.
