Membrane Proteins Are Classified by Their Position in the Bilayer

Membrane proteins carry out essential roles in the structure and function of biological membranes.
They are classified by their position in the membrane and how they interact with the bilayer.

Integral Proteins Are Embedded, Peripheral Proteins Sit on the Surface

Integral proteins have hydrophobic regions that embed them in the bilayer.
1. Their hydrophobic regions interact with the hydrocarbon chains in the membrane core.
2. They may span one layer or both layers of the bilayer.
3. Transmembrane proteins reach all the way across, with hydrophilic regions poking out on each side into the watery surroundings.
