Animal Cells Rely on Isotonic Environments for Stability

Animal cells are sensitive to their surroundings because they lack the structural support of a cell wall.
Depending on the surrounding solution, water movement can make them swell, shrink, or stay stable.

Hypotonic Solutions Cause Cells to Swell and Burst

In a hypotonic solution, the surroundings have a lower concentration of solutes than inside the cell.
Water moves into the cell by osmosis.
The cell swells, and without a cell wall the membrane may rupture, a process called lysis.

Example

Placed in pure water, red blood cells swell and burst, leaving empty membranes called red cell ghosts.

In a hypertonic solution, the surroundings have a higher concentration of solutes than inside the cell.
