If a modified title remains recognisable, the essay is assessed against the original title. Any loss of relevance caused by the change affects the assessment.
A load-bearing word is one whose replacement changes what would count as evidence for the title. That is a stronger test than asking which word looks most abstract, because abstraction is common in these titles and only some of it is doing work. Apply the test by substitution, one word at a time.
Two defensible readings can help you identify an ambiguity. Explain which reading you use, or compare the readings if the difference is part of your argument. Avoid switching between them without warning.
Where the title leaves an area of knowledge open, try your question against several areas before choosing. Where it prescribes an area, begin there and examine what its methods allow you to claim.
Before investing more time in a pairing, check its fit with the title. Cases you have already collected are useful only if they help answer the question you were set.
Try the exercise with an unfamiliar practice title. Check which words you tested, what provisional answer you reached, and which objection or uncertainty needs further work. Keep any unresolved question for the next stage.
