What Are Horizons of Meaning?

1. In The Ethics of Authenticity, Taylor argues that the modern ideal of authenticity (10.9.1) can only be fulfilled when individual choices are made against a background of significance that the individual does not create. These backgrounds are what Taylor calls horizons of meaning.
   1. Without them, the demand to "be yourself" collapses into the soft relativism and narcissism identified in 10.9.1.
2. Taylor draws the concept of "horizon" from Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutics. In Truth and Method, Gadamer argues that all understanding takes place within a horizon: a range of vision that includes everything visible from a particular vantage point.
   1. We cannot step outside all horizons; we can only fuse our horizon with those of others through dialogue and interpretation.
3. For Taylor, a horizon of meaning includes moral frameworks (what counts as good, noble, or admirable), cultural traditions (inherited practices, stories, and values), religious or spiritual beliefs, and historical narratives (the story of where we come from).
   1. These frameworks provide the vocabulary in which questions of identity become intelligible. Without a horizon, the question "who am I?" has no substantive answer.
4. Taylor's argument is that significance requires contrast. A choice can only be meaningful if some choices are more significant than others.
   1. If I say "I choose to devote my life to art," this is meaningful only against a horizon in which artistic creation is distinguished from trivial pastimes. If all choices are equally valid (as soft relativism claims), then no choice carries genuine weight or importance.

Strong Evaluation and the Erosion of Horizons

1. This connects to what Taylor calls strong evaluation (judging desires against standards of worth, asking which are higher or nobler rather than just which feel most urgent), a concept developed in his earlier work Sources of the Self (1989). Strong evaluation involves ranking our desires according to qualitative distinctions of worth: some desires are higher or nobler than others.
   1. This contrasts with weak evaluation (calculating how to satisfy given desires without questioning whether those desires are worthwhile), which merely calculates how to satisfy given desires without questioning their relative value.
2. Taylor argues that the modern culture of authenticity has eroded horizons of meaning by encouraging people to treat personal choice as the sole source of value. When people say "it's meaningful because I chose it," they are committing what Taylor regards as a fundamental error: confusing the act of choosing with the grounds that make a choice worth making.
3. This erosion is linked to what Max Weber called the "disenchantment of the world" (Entzauberung). As modern science and instrumental reason displaced religious and metaphysical frameworks, the world was stripped of its inherent meaning.
   1. Taylor argues that this disenchantment created a vacuum that the culture of authenticity attempts to fill, but without horizons, it cannot succeed.
4. The loss of horizons also connects to Nietzsche's proclamation of the "death of God" and the resulting nihilism. For Nietzsche, the collapse of Christian metaphysics left modern humanity without a foundation for values.
   1. Taylor sees the culture of authenticity as one response to this crisis, but argues that without recovering or reconstructing horizons of meaning, it leads only to triviality and moral confusion.
5. For IB Philosophy, the concept of horizons of meaning connects to epistemological (concerned with the conditions of knowledge and understanding) questions about the conditions of understanding and to ethical questions about the sources of moral value. Students should be able to explain why Taylor thinks individual choice alone cannot ground meaningful identity, and why something beyond the self is required for authenticity to be more than a hollow slogan.
