Authenticity as a Moral Ideal

1. Charles Taylor's The Ethics of Authenticity opens a new unit in the IB Philosophy syllabus, shifting from the ancient Greek concerns of Plato's Republic to the modern condition. Where Plato asked what justice requires of the individual and the state, Taylor asks what it means to be true to oneself in a world shaped by individualism, instrumental reason, and the erosion of shared moral frameworks.
2. Taylor traces the ideal of authenticity to the Romantic period and especially to Johann Gottfried Herder, who argued that each person has an original way of being.
   1. Herder held that there is a certain way of being human that is my way; I am called upon to live my life in this way, and not in imitation of anyone else's. This idea of individual originality became the foundation of the modern ethic of authenticity.

The philosophical roots extend further to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who introduced the concept of le sentiment de l'existence (the feeling of one's own existence) and argued that moral salvation comes from recovering contact with oneself. Rousseau believed that society corrupts our natural sentiments; authenticity requires stripping away social pretences to recover an inner moral voice that Rousseau called conscience.
4. Taylor emphasizes that authenticity is not merely a personal preference but a genuine moral ideal. It makes demands on us: we ought to discover and express our own identity, and failure to do so is a form of moral failure.

Sources and Malaises of Modernity

1. Modernity has eroded these frameworks, creating what Taylor describes as the malaise of modernity: a sense of meaninglessness and moral confusion.

1. Taylor identifies three malaises of modernity. The first is individualism, which, while liberating people from oppressive social orders, has also produced a narrowing of vision in which people focus exclusively on their own lives and lose sight of larger purposes.
