Individualism as Achievement and Risk

1. Throughout The Ethics of Authenticity, Taylor navigates a middle path on individualism. He refuses to join those who celebrate modern individualism uncritically (the "boosters") or those who dismiss it as mere selfishness (the "knockers," discussed in 10.9.1).
   1. This topic examines his argument that individualism is simultaneously a moral achievement and a source of serious risks to human flourishing.
2. The achievement of individualism lies in its recognition that each person has inherent dignity and the right to shape their own life. Before the modern period, identity was largely determined by birth, social rank, and tradition.
   1. The modern individual is liberated from these fixed hierarchies and recognized as a bearer of rights regardless of social position. Taylor acknowledges this as a genuine moral advance.
3. Taylor traces this achievement to multiple sources. The Reformation contributed the idea of individual conscience as the ultimate moral authority.
   1. The Enlightenment established the principle of universal human rights. Romanticism (through Herder and Rousseau, discussed in 10.9.1) added the idea that each person has an original way of being that deserves expression.

Atomism, Tocqueville, and Taylor's Response

1. Taylor connects atomistic individualism to what he calls the primacy of instrumental reason (the dominance of calculating how to achieve given ends as efficiently as possible, without asking whether the ends themselves are worthwhile). When individuals are understood as isolated agents maximizing their own satisfaction, social institutions become mere instruments for individual ends.
   1. The intrinsic value of community, tradition, and shared practices is lost, and political life is reduced to a negotiation among competing interests rather than a shared pursuit of the good.
2. Alexis de Tocqueville provides a key reference point for Taylor's analysis. In Democracy in America (1835/1840), Tocqueville warned that democratic individualism could produce a "soft despotism" in which citizens retreat into private life and surrender political agency to a centralized state that manages their affairs.

3. However, Taylor insists that the solution is not to abandon individualism but to enrich it. The authentic individual is not the atomistic self of liberal theory but a person who develops their unique identity through engagement with horizons of meaning (10.9.3) and dialogical relationships (10.9.2).
