At first glance, this title looks almost too easy. Of course both artists and natural scientists should care about ethics. The difficulty begins when we focus on the word "equally." Equal in what sense? Equal in the amount of time they spend worrying about ethics? Equal in the kinds of harm they must anticipate? Equal in the seriousness with which they reflect on the consequences of their work? The title is harder still because it uses singular labels, "the artist" and "the natural scientist," as if each field had a single stable ethical profile. In reality, ethical questions arise at different points in different knowledge practices: in method, in representation, in application, and in dissemination.
That means the best answer is unlikely to be a flat yes or no. I will argue that the artist and the natural scientist should be equally concerned with ethical questions if "equal" means equally serious and equally responsible, but not if it means their responsibilities are identical in form. Those obligations are not the same, but they can still be equally demanding. The strongest response to the title, then, is a qualified agreement: equal concern is defensible only if it allows for different kinds of ethical pressure.
