Facts are rarely encountered as bare fragments. They are usually absorbed through patterns, theories, narratives, or models that tell us what those facts mean. That is one reason the title is so interesting. It does not ask whether ideas are more alluring than facts. It asks why they are so often more alluring in the production of knowledge.
The answer is not simply that people are irrational. Ideas are alluring because they organise complexity. They offer coherence, direction, and meaning in situations where facts by themselves can feel scattered or inconclusive. This is especially visible in the human sciences, where researchers and institutions work with messy, unstable, and context-bound phenomena such as behaviour, identity, and society. There, elegant frameworks can become appealing even when the facts supporting them are partial or disputed. In the natural sciences, ideas can also become alluring, especially as paradigms or unifying theories, but the methods of the discipline usually allow empirical facts to apply more sustained corrective pressure. I will therefore argue that ideas are often more alluring because they satisfy both cognitive and institutional needs for order, but that the allure is not always epistemically bad. Sometimes ideas are necessary to make facts meaningful at all.
