Prescribed title: "Is the advice to 'study the historian before you begin to study their work' (adapted from E.H. Carr) good advice? Explore with reference to history and one other area of knowledge."
Carr's advice sounds almost self-evident at first. If historians write about the past through acts of selection, interpretation, and narration, then surely it makes sense to know something about the person doing that selecting, interpreting, and narrating. Yet the title becomes more difficult as soon as we slow down over the phrase "before you begin". It is one thing to say that contextual knowledge helps us read historical work more critically. It is another to say that such knowledge should come first, as though a reader cannot approach a text responsibly without prior biographical or ideological framing.
The value of the advice therefore depends on what we mean by "good". If it means becoming more alert to perspective, silence, and selection, then the advice is often very good in history. If it means treating personal background as a shortcut for judging reliability, it becomes dangerous. I will argue that in history, studying the historian is usually a legitimate and often necessary part of understanding the work, because interpretation is built into the discipline. In the natural sciences, however, the advice is weaker. Carr's advice is therefore good when it sharpens interpretation, but not when it replaces evaluation of evidence and method.
