Aesthetic experience
Aesthetic experience: a distinctive mode of perception in which a subject attends to an object for its sensory, formal, and expressive qualities, valued for their own sake rather than for instrumental purposes.
The sublime
The sublime is an aesthetic experience of overwhelming magnitude, power, or infinity that exceeds the mind's capacity to comprehend, producing a mixture of awe, terror, and exhilaration. Burke theorised it as rooted in terror, while Kant understood it as revealing the power of reason over sensory limitation.
