Freedom as Effort and Self-Discipline

1. Throughout the preceding topics in this section, we have examined the mass man (10.7.1), the crisis of individuality (10.7.2), the revolt against authority (10.7.3), the role of technology (10.7.4), and the function of the intellectual minority (10.7.5). In this penultimate topic, we turn to Ortega y Gasset's account of freedom, which synthesizes these themes into a distinctive philosophy of the modern self.
2. Ortega y Gasset rejects the view that freedom is simply the absence of external constraint. This negative conception of freedom (discussed in 7.3.2) treats liberty as a matter of being left alone.
   1. For Ortega, such freedom is necessary but radically insufficient. A person who is free from constraint yet makes no demands on himself is not genuinely free; he is merely unoccupied.
3. Genuine freedom, in Ortega's philosophy, requires effort and self-discipline. The free individual is one who actively constructs his life according to standards he has chosen for himself.
   1. This connects to the concept of self-demand (exigencia) discussed in 10.7.2: the select individual is free precisely because he has voluntarily submitted to a regime of intellectual and moral discipline that the mass man avoids.
4. This conception places Ortega in dialogue with the existentialist tradition (philosophers who focus on individual choice and the meaning of existence). Jean-Paul Sartre argues in Being and Nothingness (1943) that human beings are "condemned to be free": freedom is not a gift but an inescapable condition that demands constant choice.
   1. Ortega shares Sartre's insistence that freedom involves active decision rather than passive reception, though he places greater emphasis on the role of cultural and intellectual traditions in guiding those decisions.
5. Ortega's concept of freedom also connects to Kant's notion of autonomy. For Kant, genuine freedom means acting according to self-legislated moral laws rather than being driven by inclination or external pressure.
   1. Ortega secularizes this idea: the free person is one who chooses his own standards and then holds himself accountable to them, treating his life as a project of moral and intellectual self-governance.

Positive Liberty, the State, and Circumstance

1. The mass man's relationship to freedom is, for Ortega, deeply paradoxical. The mass man enjoys more formal freedoms than any previous generation: freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom of association.
   1. Yet he uses these freedoms only to pursue comfort and entertainment, never to engage in the demanding work of self-creation. His freedom is therefore empty, a freedom from rather than a freedom to.
2. This analysis connects to Isaiah Berlin's famous distinction between positive and negative liberty (7.3.2). Negative liberty is freedom from interference; positive liberty is the capacity for self-mastery and self-realization.
   1. Ortega's position aligns primarily with the positive tradition: freedom is meaningful only when it is exercised in the service of self-imposed projects that demand discipline and growth.
3. However, Ortega would caution against the authoritarian potential of positive liberty that Berlin famously identifies. Berlin warns that positive liberty can be used to justify coercing people "for their own good."
   1. Ortega avoids this danger by insisting that self-demand must be genuinely self-imposed; it cannot be imposed from outside without destroying its essential character. The noble life is a voluntary choice, not a duty enforced by the state.
4. The connection between freedom and social conditioning (the way our background, culture, and upbringing shape our choices) (1.6.2) is relevant. Ortega acknowledges that individuals are shaped by their historical and cultural circumstances, a position he develops through his concept of "my circumstance" (mi circunstancia, Spanish for the concrete historical situation each person is born into).
   1. Yet he insists that within these circumstances, the individual retains the capacity for choice, which constitutes the core of human freedom.

Responsibility and the Modern Self
