The Select Minority and Its Function

1. Throughout the previous topics in this section, we have examined the mass man (10.7.1), his erosion of individuality and excellence (10.7.2), his revolt against authority and tradition (10.7.3), and the role of technology in sustaining mass civilization (10.7.4). In this topic, we turn to the figure Ortega sees as the necessary counterweight to the mass man: the intellectual and the select minority.
2. Ortega y Gasset argues that every healthy civilization depends on a creative tension between the masses and a select minority. The select minority is not defined by wealth, birth, or institutional position but by its habit of self-demand (exigencia, discussed in 10.7.2).
   1. Its members hold themselves to rigorous standards and feel accountable for the quality of their thought and action.
3. The function of the select minority is not to rule in a political sense but to set intellectual and moral standards for the wider society. Scientists establish what counts as evidence; artists establish what counts as beauty; philosophers establish what counts as a valid argument.
   1. Without these standard-setters, Ortega argues, civilization loses its internal compass and drifts toward mediocrity.
4. Ortega's concept of the select minority connects to Plato's vision of the philosopher-king in The Republic (10.8.2), but with crucial differences. Plato envisions a political hierarchy in which philosophers hold coercive power.
   1. Ortega's select minority exercises influence through example and achievement rather than through governance: the select individual leads by demonstrating what excellence looks like, not by commanding obedience.
5. The intellectual occupies a specific role within the select minority. For Ortega, the intellectual is not simply an academic or expert but someone who engages with fundamental questions about the meaning, direction, and values of civilization.
   1. The intellectual's task is to think beyond the immediate and practical, offering society the perspective it cannot generate from within its own routines.

The Intellectual's Role Within the Minority

1. Ortega argues that the intellectual must resist the temptation to become a specialist in the narrow sense criticized in 10.7.3 and 10.7.4. The "learned ignoramus" knows everything about his field and nothing about the broader culture.
   1. The genuine intellectual, by contrast, maintains a synthetic vision (the ability to connect specialized knowledge to larger questions of human meaning, seeing how the pieces fit together) rather than stopping at expertise in one narrow field.
2. This vision of the intellectual connects to questions about the nature of philosophy (9.3.1) and its function and meaning (9.3.2). Ortega's intellectual is, in essence, a philosophical thinker: someone who refuses to accept unexamined assumptions and who insists on asking why things are as they are.
   1. This is close to Socrates' conception of the philosopher as the person who questions what others take for granted.

1. Antonio Gramsci's concept of the organic intellectual provides an instructive contrast. Gramsci argues that intellectuals arise from and serve specific social classes, helping to articulate and advance class interests.
   1. Ortega's select minority, by contrast, is defined not by class origin but by personal commitment to excellence: where Gramsci sees intellectuals as agents of social transformation (changing the economic system), Ortega sees them as custodians of civilizational standards (guardians of what counts as genuine intellectual achievement, regardless of political era).
2. Ortega insists that the relationship between the select minority and the masses should be one of mutual recognition rather than domination. In a healthy society, the masses voluntarily acknowledge the authority of those who have earned it through achievement and self-demand.
   1. When this recognition breaks down, as Ortega argues it has in modern Europe, the result is the revolt of the masses described throughout this section.

The Intellectual in Crisis

1. Ortega diagnoses a crisis of the intellectual in modern mass society. The intellectual is marginalized not through persecution but through irrelevance: the mass man simply does not care what intellectuals think.
