The Appearance of Independence

1. Simone de Beauvoir devotes the final part of The Second Sex to the figure of the independent woman, the woman who earns her own living and participates in public life. De Beauvoir acknowledges that economic independence is a necessary condition for freedom, yet she argues that it is far from sufficient.
   1. The woman who works outside the home may appear free, yet she often remains trapped within patterns of thought and behaviour shaped by patriarchal socialisation.
2. As established in 10.11.3, the independent woman carries the history of gendered socialisation into adult life. The question 10.11.5 examines is whether economic independence can overcome it.
3. De Beauvoir argues that the independent woman faces a distinctive double bind. If she conforms to feminine norms of appearance and behaviour, she is taken less seriously in professional contexts.
   1. If she rejects those norms, she is punished socially for failing to perform femininity. This dilemma reveals that the structures of patriarchal society have not been dismantled simply because some women have gained access to economic resources.
4. The double bind is philosophically significant because it reveals the limits of a purely liberal feminist programme (the view that equal legal rights and economic access are enough to achieve women's liberation). If institutional access is the goal, the independent woman can achieve it, but at the cost of either abandoning her femininity (and facing social sanction) or preserving it (and accepting professional marginalisation).
5. Neither horn constitutes genuine freedom. De Beauvoir's conclusion is that what is needed is not access to existing institutions but structural transformation of those institutions themselves, moving her beyond liberal feminism toward a structural critique.

Formal Freedom and Its Limits

1. The concept of formal versus substantive freedom is central to de Beauvoir's critique.
2. Formal freedom consists in the absence of legal barriers to participation; substantive freedom requires the material and psychological conditions necessary to exercise one's capacities fully. De Beauvoir argues that the independent woman typically possesses the former while lacking the latter, because the social world continues to treat her as Other (as analysed in 10.11.2).
3. De Beauvoir observes that the independent woman often experiences her professional achievements as fragile or undeserved. She may attribute her success to luck rather than competence, or feel that she is an impostor occupying a role meant for men.
   1. This internalised self-doubt is not a personal failing but a predictable consequence of growing up in a society that consistently devalues women's intellectual capacities.
4. The independent woman's relationship to her body remains fraught with contradiction. De Beauvoir argues that she continues to experience her body as an object of scrutiny even in professional settings.
   1. She must manage her appearance according to expectations that male colleagues do not face, and she is judged by standards that have nothing to do with her competence. This embodied inequality persists regardless of her formal status.

Romantic Life, Domestic Labour, and the Illusion

1. Romantic relationships present another dimension of the illusion. De Beauvoir argues that the independent woman who enters a romantic partnership often finds herself drawn back into patterns of dependency that contradict her professional autonomy.
   1. She may subordinate her projects to those of her partner, not because she is forced to do so but because the emotional scripts available to her have been shaped by a culture that defines love as feminine self-sacrifice.
2. De Beauvoir's analysis anticipates what later feminists would call the second shift (the unpaid domestic labour women continue to do after returning from paid work). The independent woman who works outside the home typically retains primary responsibility for domestic labour and childcare.
   1. Her workday is effectively doubled, and the exhaustion this produces limits her capacity to pursue the creative and intellectual projects through which genuine transcendence is achieved.
