Race, Gender and the Social Categories of Inequality

1. The overarching Unit 8 question, "How have concepts of race been shaped by racism?," frames this topic. Categories such as race, gender, sexual orientation, language, and ethnicity are not merely descriptive labels.
   1. They are socially constructed classifications that carry profound consequences for how individuals are treated and what opportunities they can access.
2. The influence of race on human behaviour operates through both individual attitudes and institutional structures. At the individual level, racial categories shape perceptions, expectations, and interactions.
   1. At the structural level, racial classifications are embedded in laws, policies, economic systems, and cultural norms that distribute advantages and disadvantages along racial lines.
3. Gender works in a similar way to race: like race, it organises who gets what opportunities in society. As seen in 8.1.1, gender roles assign different expectations, opportunities, and constraints to individuals based on the gender society assigns them.
   1. Feminist philosophers have shown that gender categories are not simply biological but are produced and maintained by social institutions including the family (8.1.3), education, and the workplace.

Beyond Race and Gender: Sexual Orientation and Ethnicity

1. Sexual orientation and ethnicity are further categories that shape who gets marginalised. People who do not conform to heteronormative expectations (the assumption that everyone is straight and that straight relationships are the norm) face discrimination in employment, housing, healthcare, and family law.
2. Ethnic and linguistic minorities may be marginalised through policies that privilege the dominant group's language, culture, and historical narrative.
3. The treatment of ethnic and religious minorities follows recurring patterns across societies. Minorities may face legal exclusion (denial of citizenship or voting rights), economic marginalisation (restricted access to employment and resources), cultural suppression (prohibition of languages, religions, or customs), and physical violence (pogroms, ethnic cleansing, genocide).
4. Minority nations and indigenous peoples face distinctive forms of marginalisation. Indigenous communities have been subjected to colonisation, forced assimilation, dispossession of land, and the destruction of cultural practices.
   1. The philosophical question is whether existing political frameworks can adequately address indigenous rights or whether fundamentally new approaches are required.
5. The question "What can human beings expect from their involvement in society?" highlights the gap between the promise of equal membership and the reality of systematic exclusion. Thinkers in the social contract tradition (the idea that society is a kind of agreement people make for mutual benefit) hold that excluding entire groups is a betrayal of the basic deal society is supposed to offer.
6. Structural violence, a concept developed by Johan Galtung, describes harm that results not from intentional individual actions but from the normal functioning of social institutions. When poverty, ill health, and shortened life expectancy are systematically concentrated among particular racial or ethnic groups, the social structure itself becomes a source of violence, even in the absence of overt aggression.

Mills and The Racial Contract

1. Charles W. Mills argued in The Racial Contract (1997) that the classical social contract tradition does not describe a universal agreement among all persons but a contract among white people to establish and maintain racial supremacy. The "social" contract is, in reality, a racial contract that structures the modern world along lines of racial domination.
