IB Philosophy 10.4.5 Fanon’s Critique of Humanism and Universalism Notes

The Promise and Betrayal of European Humanism

1. Frantz Fanon argues in Black Skin, White Masks that European humanism, for all its rhetoric of universal dignity and freedom, has functioned historically as a deeply exclusionary project. The ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity proclaimed during the Enlightenment were never genuinely extended to colonized peoples.
2. This critique builds directly on the earlier topics in this unit. As 10.4.1 established, racialized identity was imposed through colonial structures; as 10.4.2 showed, the white gaze fixed the colonized person as Other; and as 10.4.4 demonstrated, colonialism produced deep psychological damage.
   1. Fanon now turns to the philosophical framework that justified these practices.
3. The central contradiction Fanon identifies is that European nations proclaimed universal human rights while simultaneously enslaving, colonizing, and dehumanizing millions of people on the basis of race. Humanism did not fail to reach the colonies by accident. The colonial project was built into the heart of European modernity.
4. Aime Cesaire, Fanon's teacher and a major influence on his thought, had already articulated this critique in Discourse on Colonialism (1950). Cesaire argued that European civilization revealed its own moral bankruptcy through colonialism, and that every act of colonial violence exposed the hollowness of humanist ideals.
5. Fanon sharpens Cesaire's argument by showing how abstract humanism operates as an ideological tool. When European philosophers spoke of 'man' or 'humanity,' they implicitly meant European man.
   1. The supposedly universal category of the human was always already racialized, defined by whiteness as its unspoken norm.
6. The Enlightenment philosophers whom Fanon critiques include thinkers like Kant, Hegel, and Voltaire, all of whom made claims about human universality while simultaneously holding views that ranked races hierarchically. Hegel's philosophy of history, for instance, explicitly placed Africa outside the development of World Spirit (his term for the rational progress of history through different civilisations).

Structural Exclusion and the Ideological Cover of Humanism

1. The contradiction is not abstract. In Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and the Sublime (1764), Kant ranked races explicitly, associating Black Africans with a lack of capacity for moral feeling.
   1. The philosopher who grounded universal moral worth in rational personhood denied that rationality to colonised peoples in other writings, making Fanon's critique not a misreading of the Enlightenment but a direct confrontation with its internal contradictions.
2. Fanon argues that this is not a minor inconsistency but a structural feature of European thought. The concept of the universal human subject was constructed through the exclusion of colonized peoples.
   1. Universalism required a particular group (non-Europeans) to serve as its constitutive outside (the excluded group that makes the 'universal' category possible by being defined as falling outside it): those who were defined as less than fully human.
3. The practical consequences of this false universalism were devastating. Colonial administrators used humanist language to justify the 'civilizing mission,' claiming that colonialism was bringing reason, progress, and civilization to 'backward' peoples.
   1. Humanism became the ideological cover for exploitation and violence.
4. Jean-Paul Sartre, in his preface to Fanon's later work The Wretched of the Earth, acknowledged this critique directly. Sartre wrote that European humanism was revealed as a form of racist ideology once its colonial foundations were exposed.
   1. "There is nothing more consistent," Sartre declared, "than a racist humanism."
5. Fanon's critique does not reject the values of humanism (dignity, freedom, equality) but rather the way those values have been deployed selectively. The problem is not that humanism promises too much but that it delivers its promises only to those already recognized as fully human by the dominant racial order.
