Language as a Tool of Colonial Power

1. As discussed in 10.4.1 and 10.4.2, Frantz Fanon argues that colonialism constructs racialized identities and fixes the colonized person through the white gaze. In Black Skin, White Masks, he devotes particular attention to language as one of the most powerful mechanisms through which colonial domination operates and identities are formed.
2. Fanon opens his analysis with a striking claim: "To speak means to be in a position to use a certain syntax, to grasp the morphology of this or that language, but it means above all to assume a culture, to support the weight of a civilization." This establishes that language is never merely a neutral tool for communication but always carries the cultural and political weight of the world that produced it.
3. This passage appears in Chapter 1 of Black Skin, White Masks ('The Negro and Language'), which is essential reading for Paper 2 questions on language and identity.
4. The colonial imposition of language is central to Fanon's argument. When European powers colonized Africa, the Caribbean, and other regions, they established their languages as the official medium of education, government, and public life.
   1. Indigenous languages were marginalized, ridiculed, or actively suppressed, creating a linguistic hierarchy that mirrored the racial one.
5. This linguistic hierarchy has profound implications for identity formation. Fanon argues that the colonized person who learns French, English, or Portuguese does not simply acquire a practical skill.
   1. They internalize the worldview embedded in that language, including its assumptions about civilization, progress, beauty, and human value, all of which position the colonizer as superior.

Language, Thought, and the Limits of the Colonized World

1. Fanon's analysis connects to broader traditions in the philosophy of language. Thinkers such as Ludwig Wittgenstein argued that the limits of one's language are the limits of one's world.
   1. If the colonized person's primary intellectual language is that of the colonizer, then their conceptual horizon (the range of ideas and possibilities one can even think about) is shaped by colonial categories and values.
2. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis in linguistics suggests that language structures thought and perception. Fanon's work anticipates this insight by showing that adopting the colonial language restructures how the colonized person perceives themselves and their place in the world.
   1. To think in French is, in part, to think as the French world demands.
3. Fanon also draws attention to the way colonial language creates social distinctions among the colonized. In Martinique and other French colonies, those who spoke metropolitan French were granted higher social status than those who spoke Creole.
   1. This produced a hierarchy within the colonized community that reinforced colonial power from within.
4. The philosophical significance of this analysis is that power operates through language at a level deeper than explicit commands or laws. Language shapes what can be thought, what counts as knowledge, and whose experiences are considered legitimate.
   1. For Fanon, linguistic domination is therefore inseparable from political and psychological domination.

Speaking the Colonizer's Language

1. Fanon analyzes in detail the experience of the Black Antillean who travels to France and returns speaking metropolitan French. This figure occupies a central place in Black Skin, White Masks because they embody the way language functions as a mechanism of racial aspiration and self-transformation under colonialism.
2. The returned Antillean who speaks perfect French is treated differently by their community. They are regarded with a mixture of admiration and suspicion: admiration because they have mastered the colonizer's language and thus appear to have risen in the colonial hierarchy; suspicion because they seem to have abandoned their local identity in favour of a European one.
3. This linguistic aspiration is a specific form of lactification (see 10.4.1): the colonised person's broader desire to culturally whiten themselves by mastering the coloniser's language.
4. However, this strategy is ultimately self-defeating. No matter how perfectly the colonized person speaks French, the white world continues to perceive them through the racial schema described in 10.4.2.
   1. Their mastery of language cannot override the white gaze that fixes them as Black. The linguistic performance of whiteness is met with a denial of recognition.
