IB Philosophy 10.3.1 Radical Doubt and the Quest for Certainty Notes

The Method of Doubt

1. Rene Descartes (1596-1650) published his Meditations on First Philosophy in 1641, setting out a radical project: to demolish all his previously held beliefs and rebuild knowledge from the ground up on an absolutely certain foundation.
2. Descartes motivates this project by observing that many beliefs he once held as true later proved false. If the foundations of his knowledge are unreliable, then everything built upon them is suspect.
   1. Rather than examining each belief individually, he proposes to undermine the principles on which all former opinions rested.
3. The method of doubt is not an expression of genuine scepticism but a methodological tool (a technique used to achieve a goal, not a permanent attitude). Descartes does not actually believe that all knowledge is impossible; rather, he uses doubt as a philosophical scalpel to cut away uncertain beliefs and reveal what cannot be doubted.
4. This approach reflects the intellectual context of the seventeenth-century scientific revolution. With traditional Aristotelian physics being overturned by the new mechanistic science of Galileo and others, Descartes sought to provide epistemological foundations (secure grounds for knowledge) that could withstand any challenge.
5. The method of doubt proceeds through stages of increasing radicality (each stage pushing doubt further than the last). Descartes begins with relatively modest doubts about the reliability of the senses, then progressively extends doubt to encompass even the most basic mathematical truths, ensuring that no belief escapes scrutiny.
6. This systematic approach connects to the study of scepticism (the philosophical position that knowledge is impossible or very difficult to attain) in Unit 3.2.1. While ancient sceptics such as Pyrrho suspended judgement on all matters, Descartes uses doubt constructively, as a means to discover certainty rather than to permanently withhold assent.
7. The quest for certainty also connects to the Confucian emphasis on epistemic humility discussed in 10.2.6. While Confucius values knowing what one does not know, Descartes goes further by systematically questioning whether one truly knows anything at all.
8. Descartes' project has a deeply personal and existential dimension (it is not just a logical exercise but a genuine attempt to confront what one can know alone, from scratch).
   1. The Meditations are written in the first person as a solitary thinker's journey, inviting the reader to follow the same path of doubt and discovery. This individual focus contrasts sharply with the communal orientation of Confucian thought (10.2).

The Argument from Sensory Deception

1. The first stage of Descartes' doubt targets sense perception. He observes that the senses have sometimes deceived him: a square tower looks round from a distance, and objects in water appear bent.
   1. If the senses can deceive, they cannot be entirely trustworthy.
2. This argument from illusion has ancient precedents. Plato's cave allegory and the Pyrrhonist modes of scepticism both exploit the unreliability of the senses.
   1. Descartes adapts these classical arguments to serve his constructive epistemological project.
3. However, Descartes acknowledges that the argument from sensory deception has limited scope. While the senses sometimes mislead about distant or very small objects, it seems absurd to doubt that one is sitting by the fire, wearing a dressing gown, holding a piece of paper.
   1. Immediate perceptual experience appears resistant to doubt.

Scope and Epistemological Significance

1. This limitation prompts Descartes to seek a more powerful ground for doubt. If the argument from sensory deception cannot undermine all perceptual beliefs, a stronger sceptical hypothesis is needed to extend doubt to even the most obvious and immediate experiences.
2. The argument connects to theories of perception discussed in Unit 3.2.2. The possibility that the senses systematically misrepresent reality raises fundamental questions about the relationship between appearance and reality that recur throughout epistemology.
