IB Geography 4.1.1 Globalization Indices Notes

Small Trading States Sit at the Top of Both Ratio-Based Rankings

1. The KOF Globalisation Index, released by the KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zürich on 19 December 2025, ranks the Netherlands first, Switzerland second and Belgium third.
2. The rest of that top ten runs United Kingdom, Sweden, Austria, Germany, Denmark, France and Finland, so all ten of the most globalized countries in the 2025 edition are European.
3. The world's two largest economies, the United States and China, are absent from it.

1. Most of the index's economic components are ratios, such as trade measured against national output, so a country's score depends on the size of its cross-border flows relative to its own economy.
2. A small economy inside a large integrated market crosses a border to do what a large economy does internally, so one lorry journey counts as international trade in Belgium and as domestic freight in the United States.
3. A globalization index turns a country's participation in global interactions into one comparable number, which is the move higher level geographers are asked to interrogate rather than accept.

KOF Separates What Countries Do from What Their Laws Allow

1. The index covers 195 countries and runs from 1970 to 2023, so the most recent data year in the 2025 edition is 2023, two years behind the edition label.
2. Every variable belongs to one of three dimensions, economic, social and political, with each dimension carrying exactly one third of the overall score.
3. Inside each dimension the variables split again into a de facto half, which counts flows that actually happened, and a de jure half, which counts the rules that permit them.
4. The overall index is the average of the de facto index and the de jure index, so an open legal framework can lift a country whose actual flows are modest.
5. A government that abolishes a tariff raises its de jure trade score in the year of the reform, while its de facto trade score moves only once importers and exporters respond.
6. The 2025 edition reports that in 2023 actual social interconnectedness grew much more sharply than the institutional framework around it, which is the de facto half pulling away from the de jure half.

1. De facto trade globalization
   1. Trade in goods carries 39.5 percent of this sub-index, trade in services 41.7 percent and trade partner diversity 18.8 percent.
2. De facto financial globalization
   1. Foreign direct investment carries 25.5 percent, international debt 29.9 percent, international income payments 29.5 percent, portfolio investment 15.0 percent and international reserves 0.1 percent.
3. De jure trade globalization
   1. Trade regulations carry 29.5 percent, trade taxes 27.5 percent, tariffs 26.7 percent and trade agreements 16.3 percent.
4. De jure financial globalization
   1. Capital account openness carries 38 percent, investment restrictions 31.4 percent and international investment agreements 30.7 percent.

Social Globalization Counts People, Data and Brands Together

1. The social dimension divides into three equal thirds: interpersonal contact, information flows and cultural proximity.
2. Interpersonal de facto counts international voice traffic at 23.3 percent, personal transfers at 23.1 percent, international students at 20 percent, migration at 17.3 percent and international tourism at 15.7 percent.
3. Informational de facto counts used internet bandwidth at 37.1 percent, high technology exports at 32.4 percent and international patents at 30.5 percent.
4. Cultural de facto counts trade in cultural goods at 33.3 percent, trade in personal services at 30.8 percent, international trademarks at 23.4 percent, McDonald's restaurants at 9.3 percent and IKEA stores at 3.2 percent.
5. Counting outlets of two named retail chains builds an assumption into the measure, that cultural globalization arrives as Western consumer brands.
6. A country whose strongest cultural imports are Korean television drama, Nigerian film or Turkish serials gains nothing on those two components, though its exchange with the world may be intense.
7. The de jure cultural sub-index weights human capital at 42 percent, civil liberties at 36.8 percent and gender parity at 21.2 percent, which are domestic social conditions rather than cross-border flows.

Political Globalization Is a Full Third of the KOF Score

1. De facto political globalization counts international non-governmental organizations at 38.2 percent, embassies at 37.4 percent and United Nations peacekeeping participation at 24.4 percent.
2. De jure political globalization counts membership of international organizations at 36.5 percent, international treaties at 32.6 percent and treaty partner diversity at 30.8 percent.
3. A country with a small diplomatic network scores low on a third of the index however much it trades.

The Weights Come from the Data and Move Every Year

1. Nobody picks those percentages by hand, because KOF sets the weight of each variable by principal components analysis, a statistical method that selects the combination carrying the most variation.
2. The analysis runs on a rolling ten-year window, so the weights applied to a given year are calculated from the ten years before it.
3. Because the window moves, the weight on a variable such as international voice traffic can fall as the world's telephone habits change, without anyone deciding to reduce it.
4. Those percentages are printed in the structure document KOF issues alongside the 2025 edition, a document whose own heading still reads 2024 Globalisation Index, so a weight belongs to a data year rather than to an edition label.
5. Each raw variable is then rescaled onto a 1 to 100 scale, where 100 is the highest value recorded anywhere in the panel across all countries and all years.
6. Rescaling against the whole panel rather than within each year separately keeps scores comparable over time, so a rising score records a real rise rather than a reshuffle of positions.
7. In the 2023 data Afghanistan was among the countries recording the largest increases against 2022, while Turkey and the West Bank and Gaza were among those recording the sharpest declines.

DHL Measures Depth and Breadth and Crowns a Different Country

1. The DHL Global Connectedness Report 2026, written with New York University's Stern School of Business by Steven Altman and Caroline Bastian, was published on 10 March 2026.
2. It ranks 180 countries from more than nine million data points on 14 types of international flow, grouped into trade, capital, information and people.
3. Depth is how much of a country's trade, capital, information and people flows are international rather than domestic.
4. Breadth is how far those flows are distributed around the globe rather than concentrated between particular origins and destinations.
5. On the 2026 edition, which ranks countries on their 2024 flows, Singapore ranks first with 78 points, Luxembourg second with 74 and the Netherlands third with 73.
6. The United Kingdom is ninth with 66, the United States thirty-ninth with 57 and China eighty-first with 49.
7. World connectedness stood at 25 percent in 2025 on a scale where 0 percent means no flow crosses a border and 100 percent means borders and distance have no effect, so most activity in most countries remains domestic.

The United Kingdom Ranks Fourth, Ninth or First

1. The United Kingdom is fourth overall on the KOF 2025 edition and ninth on the DHL 2026 ranking.
2. It is first in the world on KOF's political globalization dimension, ahead of France in second place and Germany in third.
3. It is also the breadth leader on the DHL index, with flows spread more widely around the world than any other country's.
4. Its depth is held down by a large domestic economy, which puts a large number in the denominator of every international-to-domestic ratio.

Elcano Scales Presence up by Country Size and the Order Inverts

1. The Elcano Global Presence Index, published by the Elcano Royal Institute in Madrid, covers 150 countries in a 2025 edition reporting data for 2024.
2. It ranks the United States first and China second, followed by Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom, with Spain thirteenth.
3. Economic presence counts energy and primary goods exports, manufactures trade, services exports and the global stock of foreign direct investment.
4. Military presence counts deployed troops and holdings of major equipment, including aircraft carriers, frigates, cruisers, destroyers, nuclear-powered submarines and amphibious assault ships.
5. Soft presence covers migration, tourism, sport, culture, education, information, technology, development cooperation and climate.
6. Variables are trimmed by winsorization and rescaled by min-max normalization onto a 0 to 1,000 range, then multiplied back up by the country's output or population relative to the world average, which is why the order inverts.
7. Elcano sets its weights from a survey of more than 100 international relations experts repeated every three years, which is expert judgement where KOF uses a statistical method.

Europe Holds the Level While Asia Holds the Movement

1. East Asia and the Pacific lifted its share of world trade from 24 percent in 2001 to 32 percent in 2025, on the DHL 2026 report's figures.
2. The United Arab Emirates records the largest rise in connectedness of any country since 2001 in that same report.
3. Europe still ranks highest of any region on the 2026 connectedness measure, so the highest levels and the fastest gains sit in different parts of the world.

Kearney Ranks Cities, so One Country Stops Having One Score

1. The Kearney 2025 Global Cities Report, published on 5 November 2025, ranks 158 cities using 31 indicators.
2. Its five dimensions are business activity, human capital, information exchange, cultural experience and political engagement.
3. Kearney states that the index quantifies each city's ability to attract, retain and generate global flows of people, capital and ideas.
4. The 2025 top five are New York, London, Paris, Tokyo and Singapore.
5. New York leads the world's cities on that ranking while the United States sits thirty-ninth of 180 countries on the DHL 2026 ranking.
6. A national index gives Manhattan and rural Mississippi the same number, so a country score is an average across places that are nothing like each other.

A High Score Measures Flow Rather than Benefit

1. In 2024, re-exports made up about 49.7 percent of the value of Dutch goods exports, with domestically produced goods making up the other 50.3 percent, according to Statistics Netherlands in Dutch Trade in Facts and Figures 2025.
2. A re-export is a good that enters the Netherlands, receives little or no processing, and leaves again for another country.
3. Each re-exported good is counted once as an import and once as an export, so it lifts the trade ratios feeding the Dutch score twice over.
4. Statistics Netherlands puts Dutch earnings at 12 eurocents per euro of re-exports in 2023, against 51 eurocents per euro of domestically produced exports.
5. About half of the flow carrying the Netherlands to the top of the KOF ranking earns the Dutch economy roughly a quarter as much per euro as the other half.
6. The index measures the volume passing through Rotterdam and Schiphol accurately, though volume passing through is a different quantity from income staying behind.

Globalization Scores and National Income Move Together for Several Reasons

1. The KOF 2025 top ten is made up entirely of high-income European countries, which is a correlation between the index and national income.
2. That correlation supports at least three readings, and the index contains nothing that could decide between them.
   1. Cross-border integration may raise incomes through specialization and access to larger markets.
   2. High incomes may buy the airports, bandwidth, embassies and student places the index counts.
   3. Both may follow from something else, such as being a small state inside a large customs union.

Plotting Two Indices Against Each Other Shows Where They Disagree

1. Put one index on each axis of a scatter graph with one point per country, so that the shape of the cloud shows how far the two measures agree.
2. Rank the countries on each index before plotting when the two scales differ in kind, because an absolute measure such as Elcano produces a handful of extreme values that flatten everything else.
3. Countries lying close to the trend are those both indices treat the same way, which is why they carry little information.
4. The countries worth naming are those sitting far from the trend, because their position identifies a methodological difference rather than a data error.
5. A point for China would sit low on a DHL axis and high on an Elcano axis, marking the ratio against absolute contrast.
6. A point for Singapore would sit high on both flow measures and lower on anything giving weight to political reach.
7. Read the outliers as places with a distinctive geography, and not as errors to be cleaned off the plot.

Match the Map to the Measure: Shading for Ratios, Symbols for Totals

1. A choropleth map shades each country by its index score, which is the standard way these rankings are published.
2. How the map looks depends on the class intervals chosen, though the underlying scores do not change when those intervals change.
3. Equal-interval classes cut the range into bands of equal width, which crowds most countries into one or two colours when scores cluster.
4. Quantile classes put an equal number of countries in each band, which spreads the colours out and can exaggerate small differences.
5. A choropleth also shades whole national territories, so Russia and Canada arrive as vast blocks of colour while Singapore is almost invisible.
6. A proportional symbol map instead draws a circle at each country whose area, not whose radius, is scaled to the value shown.
7. Symbols suit an absolute measure such as Elcano, where the quantity is a total, while shading suits a ratio measure such as KOF, where every value is already adjusted for country size.

Naming the Component Turns a Rank into an Explanation

1. A rank quoted on its own states a position and explains nothing about why a country holds it, which is why this higher level material asks for the component behind the number rather than the number itself.
2. The KOF 2025 edition reports that in 2023 financial globalization grew significantly while trade globalization declined slightly on average, so one dimension moved in two directions at once.
3. The DHL 2026 report records trade between the United States and China at 2.0 percent of world trade over the first three quarters of 2025, down from 2.7 percent in 2024 and 3.6 percent at its 2015 peak.
4. That decline sits in one bilateral link, while world connectedness held at 25 percent in the same year, in line with the record set in 2022.
5. The same report finds goods traded in 2025 travelled an average of 5,010 kilometres, the longest distance in its series, with a declining share of flows staying inside a region.
6. One pair of partners pulling apart is compatible with the world as a whole trading over longer distances.

Which Index Answers Which Question

1. For how open a country's rules are, read a de jure sub-index rather than an overall rank.
2. For how much of a country's activity crosses a border, read DHL's depth or KOF's de facto economic dimension.
3. For how far a country's connections reach, read DHL's breadth rather than any measure of volume.
4. For how much weight a country carries in the world, read an absolute measure such as Elcano rather than a ratio.
