Key Devices in Web Pages and Social Media

Definition

Web page

A digital text designed for online reading, combining hyperlinks, multimedia elements, and scannable layout to deliver information or prompt user interaction.

Digital texts use the same rhetorical devices as print texts, but they combine them with platform-specific conventions (hashtags, interactive buttons, visual hierarchy) that carry meaning in ways print cannot replicate.
Analyse digital conventions with the same precision as literary devices: a hashtag, an emoji, or a call-to-action button is not decorative. Each carries rhetorical weight and should be examined for purpose and effect.

Call to Action

A call to action (CTA) is a direct instruction telling the reader what to do: "Sign up," "Donate now," "Share this post." CTAs are typically short, imperative, and visually prominent through contrasting colours or bold text.
Analyse the verb choice in a CTA: does it command, invite, or create urgency? "Help us" implies collective responsibility, "Act now" implies scarcity and time pressure, "Join 1 million" implies social proof. Each positions the reader differently.
