Global Contexts: Why a Design Unit Exists at All

1. A global context answers why a unit is worth doing: who outside the classroom is affected, and what changes for them.
2. There are six, shared across every MYP subject: identities and relationships; orientation in space and time; personal and cultural expression; scientific and technical innovation; globalization and sustainability; fairness and development.
3. A unit runs on one of them, picked because it fits the design situation.
4. The context works alongside the key concept and the related concept, which have their own articles: the concepts give you a lens, the context gives you a purpose.
5. You meet the context again at criterion D, when you explain the impact of your product on the client or target audience.

Identity and Expression: Contexts About Who People Are

1. Identities and relationships covers how people see themselves and how they get on with others: health, wellbeing, family, friendship, belonging.
2. In a design project that becomes a wellbeing tracker for Year 9 tutor groups, a lunch box that keeps a nut free meal separate, or seating that lets a quiet student join a group without being on display.
3. Research under this context is personal, so remove names from survey answers before anything goes into the folder.
4. Personal and cultural expression covers how people express beliefs, ideas and creativity through art, craft, ritual and objects.
5. In design that becomes a set piece for a school production, packaging for a family recipe sold at the summer fete, or lettering for a festival poster.
6. It rewards going deep into one tradition rather than skating over five, because the marks come from understanding what the shapes and colours actually mean to people.

Place, Time and Consequence: Contexts About Where Design Lands

1. Orientation in space and time is about place, journeys, history and how people work out where they are.
2. Design projects here include wayfinding for a hospital corridor, a display board about the local canal, or a printed timetable for a bus stop with no live screen.
3. It also suits product histories, like comparing a 1950s spring kitchen scale with a digital one and explaining which user need drove the change.
4. Globalization and sustainability is about how local decisions connect to the wider world: supply chains, shared resources and environmental limits.
5. Design projects here include packaging that can be repaired or refilled, a product made from a single recyclable material, or tracing how far the parts of a school chair travelled before assembly.
6. This context expects evidence about consequences, so recycling codes, transport distances and what your local facility actually accepts belong in criterion A.

What Is Possible and Who Gets It

1. Scientific and technical innovation is about what new tools, materials and methods make possible, and what they cost us in return.
2. Design projects here include a microcontroller that switches a corridor light on when someone walks past, a 3D printed replacement for a snapped lab clamp, or a study of what the laser cutter changed about school workshops.
3. It fits digital design neatly, since the context asks both what the technology now allows and who cannot reach it.
4. Fairness and development is about access, rights, equal opportunity and who currently gets left out.
5. Design projects here include a low cost water filter, a cutlery grip usable with one hand, or a school website rebuilt to load on a five year old phone over a slow connection.
6. This context expects you to name the group that misses out and show with evidence that your solution reaches them.

From Generic Brief to Purposeful Brief

1. A generic brief names an object: "design a water bottle".
2. A purposeful brief names a user and a consequence, and the global context is where that consequence comes from.
3. The context also adds constraints, and constraints are what give criterion A research something to find out.
4. Take those four words, "design a water bottle", and three different contexts pull them into three different projects.
5. Each version needs its own research, its own specification and its own test, from an identical starting point.
6. Write the context into the brief as a sentence about who benefits, rather than a label in brackets after the title.

Keeping the Context Alive Through the Whole Cycle

1. At criterion A the context decides which research questions are worth asking and which users you go and talk to.
2. At criterion B it appears as the specification points you justify your chosen idea against.
3. At criterion C it usually rules something out, for example an adhesive that would stop the product being recycled.
4. At criterion D it gives you the impact question, which you answer with test data instead of a hopeful sentence.
5. If you could delete every mention of the context and the folder would read exactly the same, the context never did any work.
