The Challenge of Religious Diversity

1. The previous topics in this sub-theme examined the nature of religious experience (5.3.1) and its epistemic value (5.3.2). This final topic shifts from individual experience to the social and political question of how diverse religious traditions should coexist within a single society and across the global community.

How should diverse religious traditions coexist?

1. This question has become increasingly urgent in the contemporary world, where migration, globalisation, and digital communication bring adherents of different religions into closer contact than at any previous point in history. The philosophical challenge is to develop a framework for religious coexistence that respects both diversity and truth.
2. The overarching Unit 5 question, "Could religion be seen as a purely social phenomenon?", is directly relevant. If religion is primarily a social and cultural product (as Durkheim argued, discussed in 5.3.2), then religious diversity is simply cultural diversity, and the question of coexistence becomes a matter of political management.
3. If religions make genuine truth claims about a transcendent reality, then the fact that they contradict one another (as discussed in 5.1.3) creates a deeper philosophical problem.
4. Three broad philosophical positions on religious diversity have been developed: exclusivism, inclusivism, and pluralism. Each offers a different answer to the question of how multiple religions can coexist, and each has distinct implications for tolerance, dialogue, and the relationship between religious commitment and respect for others.

Exclusivism, Inclusivism, and Pluralism

1. Exclusivism holds that one particular religion possesses the full and complete truth, and all other religions are, to varying degrees, in error. This is the traditional position of most Abrahamic religions: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism each historically claimed to be the uniquely correct path to God.
2. Exclusivism provides a clear theological identity but raises the question of how adherents of the "true" religion should relate to those they consider mistaken.
3. Karl Barth represents the most philosophically rigorous form of exclusivism: God's self-revelation in Christ is the sole source of genuine knowledge of God, and all other religious traditions, however sincere, are human constructions rather than encounters with the divine. The practical implication is stark: if only one tradition has access to truth, interreligious dialogue becomes at best a charitable exercise and at worst a compromising of that truth.
4. Consider a Christian exclusivist and a Muslim exclusivist meeting at an interfaith conference, each believing the other's deepest convictions are fundamentally mistaken. Can genuine mutual respect survive this belief?
5. Inclusivism holds that one religion possesses the fullest truth, but that other religions contain partial truths and can serve as vehicles for genuine religious experience.
   1. Karl Rahner's concept of the "anonymous Christian" exemplifies this position: Rahner argued that people of other faiths can receive God's grace without explicitly professing Christianity.
6. Inclusivism is more generous than exclusivism but still maintains a hierarchy of religious truth.

1. Inclusivity is more generous than exclusivism, but critics from other traditions find it deeply patronising: it claims to know another person's spiritual reality better than they do. A Buddhist might reasonably object that their practice has its own integrity that does not need Christian validation.
2. Pluralism holds that no single religion has a monopoly on truth and that the major world religions are different culturally conditioned responses to the same ultimate reality. This is the position most closely associated with John Hick, whose work is required by the IB syllabus and will be examined in detail in the next section.

John Hick: Religious Pluralism and "The Real"

1. Hick's pluralist hypothesis, developed most fully in An Interpretation of Religion (1989), attempts to resolve the problem of contradictory religious claims by proposing that all major religions are different human responses to the same ultimate divine reality.
2. Hick calls this ultimate reality "the Real" (das Reale), borrowing the concept from Kant's distinction between phenomena (things as they appear to us) and noumena (things as they are in themselves).
