What Do Ascetic Ideals Mean?

1. The Third Essay of On the Genealogy of Morality asks: "What do ascetic ideals mean?" This question extends the genealogical investigations of the First Essay (master and slave morality, 10.5.2) and the Second Essay (bad conscience and guilt, 10.5.3) by examining why self-denial and suffering have been elevated to the highest moral and spiritual values across cultures and centuries.
2. Ascetic ideals encompass a wide range of practices: fasting, celibacy, voluntary poverty, solitude, mortification of the flesh, and the general renunciation of sensual pleasure. Nietzsche observes that these practices appear in nearly every major religious and philosophical tradition, suggesting that they respond to a deep human need rather than an accidental cultural preference.
3. Nietzsche's central claim is that ascetic ideals provide meaning. Human beings, he argues, would rather will nothingness than not will at all.
   1. The ascetic ideal gives suffering a purpose and direction: it tells the sufferer that their pain has significance, that self-denial is a path to higher truth. Without this framework, suffering would be merely pointless and unbearable.

Ascetic Ideals Across Human Types

   1. Nietzsche uses Richard Wagner as an example, arguing that Wagner's late embrace of asceticism (in Parsifal) represented a betrayal of his earlier artistic vitality.
2. The Wagner case is not merely biographical. It demonstrates that even art, Nietzsche's designated counterforce to the ascetic ideal, can be colonised by ascetic values.
   1. When Parsifal presents Christian renunciation and redemption through suffering as the highest artistic theme, it confirms Nietzsche's darkest worry: the ascetic ideal has no real competitor in Western culture. Art requires constant vigilance against reclamation by the very values it opposes.
3. For philosophers, the ascetic ideal has a different meaning: Nietzsche argues that philosophers have historically embraced poverty, solitude, and celibacy not from genuine moral conviction but because these conditions serve their intellectual work.
   1. The philosopher needs freedom from social obligations, sensual distractions, and material concerns in order to think. Asceticism is, for the philosopher, a practical strategy disguised as a moral commitment.
4. Schopenhauer exemplifies the philosophical attachment to asceticism. His metaphysics of the will (the blind, purposeless striving at the heart of reality) led him to advocate the denial of the will to live as the path to liberation from suffering.
   1. Nietzsche, once Schopenhauer's disciple, came to see this as a philosophical expression of life-denial rather than genuine wisdom.
5. Nietzsche connects the philosopher's embrace of asceticism to the broader argument about power and knowledge (developed in 10.5.6). The philosopher's claim to stand above ordinary human concerns, to access truths invisible to the common person, depends on a posture of detachment and self-denial that mirrors the priest's claim to spiritual authority.
6. The Third Essay's opening question is itself a model of the genealogical method (10.5.1): rather than debating whether asceticism is morally good or bad, Nietzsche asks what function it serves and what psychological needs it satisfies.
