The Critique of Biological Determinism

1. De Beauvoir begins The Second Sex by examining the biological arguments for women's subordination, acknowledging that female bodies differ from male bodies in ways related to reproduction, musculature, and hormonal constitution, but insisting that these biological facts are not self-interpreting: they acquire significance only within a social context that assigns meaning and value to them.
2. The biological account of female reproductive burden notes that pregnancy, lactation, and menstruation impose physical demands on women that males do not experience; de Beauvoir accepts this factual claim but argues that the question is not whether these demands exist but whether they must translate into social subordination, since technology, social organisation, and cultural values determine how biology is lived.
3. De Beauvoir draws on comparative biology to show that female subordination is not universal in nature: in many species, females are physically dominant or at least equal; the claim that human gender hierarchy is 'natural' is therefore not supported by the evidence of the broader animal kingdom but reflects selective interpretation of biological data to justify existing social arrangements.
4. The key philosophical move is de Beauvoir's existentialist reframing of biology. Drawing on Sartre's distinction between facticity (the given facts about your situation that you cannot change) and transcendence (the capacity to respond to those facts freely and give them meaning), she argues that the body is not a thing that determines consciousness but a situation through which consciousness acts. The female body is a situation, not a destiny: its meaning is created through the projects and choices of the person who lives it.
5. De Beauvoir argues that biological arguments commit the naturalistic fallacy (the mistake of moving from a factual 'is' to a moral 'ought'): they slide illegitimately from descriptive claims about what is the case ('women bear children') to prescriptive claims about what ought to be the case ('women should be confined to domestic roles'). Facts about the body do not entail norms about social organisation.
6. The critique of biological determinism connects to the Core Theme's treatment of human nature (Unit 1): de Beauvoir challenges the assumption that there is a fixed female nature determined by biology, arguing instead that what counts as 'feminine' is a historical and cultural product that varies across societies and historical periods.

The Body as Situation

1. De Beauvoir acknowledges that the body matters for the experience of being a woman, but insists that the body's significance is always mediated by social structures, economic conditions, and cultural meanings; a woman's experience of pregnancy, for example, differs radically depending on whether she lives in a society that provides material support and social recognition for mothers.
2. The distinction between sex and gender that later feminists such as Judith Butler would develop is already implicit in de Beauvoir's argument: biological sex is a set of physical characteristics, while gender is a socially constructed identity imposed on individuals through socialisation, education, and cultural norms, a theme explored further in 10.11.3.
3. De Beauvoir's rejection of biological determinism does not mean she ignores the body. Rather, she argues for a phenomenological understanding of embodiment (an approach that focuses on the first-person, lived experience of having a body) in which the body is neither a prison nor an irrelevance but the medium through which freedom is exercised. The question is not what the body is but what the body can become within different social configurations.
4. A naturalist critic might argue that even if de Beauvoir is right that biology does not determine destiny, some biological differences generate genuinely different constraints on freedom that are not merely cultural.
   1. De Beauvoir's response uses her own example: a woman's experience of pregnancy varies enormously depending on whether she lives in a society that provides material support. The same biological event produces radically different lived experiences depending on social organisation, confirming that the social, not the biological, is the determinative variable.
