Social Factors: Poverty, Class, and a Feudal Society

Life Below the Poverty Line

1. In the years after the Second World War, the vast majority of Egyptians lived below the poverty line.
2. Slow economic development had kept the rural population, the Fellahin, extremely poor for generations.
3. The gap between rich and poor was static rather than narrowing, with almost no realistic path for a poor family to improve its position.
4. People living in poverty increasingly felt neglected by their rulers, so when an opportunity for change arose in 1952, many rallied behind it.

A Rigid, Feudal Social Structure

1. Egypt had remained an aristocratic, feudal society that favoured a small privileged class and neglected the needs of everyone else.
2. The ruling classes' refusal to reform the system was partly caused by the pressure of outsiders like Britain, but it also reflected their own unwillingness to improve conditions for ordinary Egyptians.
3. Landowning families, the royal court, and a small class of professionals and officials controlled almost all wealth, status, and political influence.

3. Early marriage remained common in rural areas, and women had little say in decisions about land, income, or household finances even though their labour sustained both.

Health, Disease, and Rural Life Expectancy

Everyday Resentment: Testimony and Popular Culture

1. Beyond formal politics, everyday cultural expressions captured this inequality, from satirical songs and street theatre mocking landowners and the royal court to folk sayings contrasting the fellah's hard labour with the ease of the wealthy.
2. Newspapers aimed at a broader readership increasingly printed reports and cartoons contrasting royal extravagance, such as King Farouk's lavish personal spending, with the everyday hardship of the rural and urban poor.
3. This popular cultural record, though harder to quantify than land statistics, shows that resentment of the existing social order was shared well beyond the small circle of the effendi class or the officer corps.

Religious Institutions and Social Welfare

1. Religious charitable networks, including those run by the Muslim Brotherhood as well as traditional mosque endowments, filled gaps left by the state in areas such as basic schooling, food distribution, and medical clinics for the poor.
2. This meant that for many fellahin and urban poor, everyday encounters with organised welfare came through religious institutions rather than through the state, reinforcing why groups such as the Brotherhood could build such deep grassroots support despite the state's neglect.
