Heritage, Customs, and Digital Culture

The cultural context reaches into what makes a community itself: its heritage, customs and celebrations, and the subcultures people belong to.
Through digitization, culture once tied to place and passed on face to face can now be copied, shared, and joined from anywhere.
A rich site for the change, identity, and space concepts. Heritage and customs carry a community forward over time. Subcultures are where a lot of people find belonging today.

Preserving Heritage in Digital Form

Museums, libraries, and archives create digital heritage by scanning artefacts and making 3D models so fragile or distant treasures can be studied worldwide.
Opportunities: a virtual reality tour can walk an ancient temple, and when a site is destroyed a digital record may be all that survives.
1. Techniques: photogrammetry stitches photos into a 3D model, laser scanning measures to the millimetre, and high-resolution imaging lets restorers rebuild from data.
Digitizing raises values and ethics questions: who owns a digital copy of a sacred object, and some knowledge is meant to be restricted, not public.
Contested: a museum may see safe-keeping, but the source community may see a sacred object digitized without consent. For Indigenous and colonized peoples a scan can repeat an older act of removal in digital form.
