The Yan'an Years: Party-Building and Mao's Consolidation

1. Yan'an was a poor, remote town in northern Shaanxi, surrounded by loess caves that CCP leaders used as offices and homes. For twelve years (1935-1947) it was the headquarters of communist China.
2. The isolation that made it defensible also made it a crucible: the CCP that emerged from Yan'an was more disciplined, more ideologically coherent, and more genuinely mass-based than any previous version of the party. The base area was governed through the same approach as the Jiangxi Soviet, land reform, peasant organisation, and mass mobilisation, but the scale and sophistication had grown.
3. The CCP ran schools, hospitals, cooperatives, and administrative courts. It produced newspapers and conducted political education campaigns. The party built a genuine institutional presence in the communities it governed.

Rectification and Mao's Ideological Control

1. In 1942, Mao launched the Rectification Movement (Zhengfeng), a party-wide ideological campaign that ran until 1944. It was ostensibly a campaign to correct “subjective” errors and “sectarianism” in party work, but its deeper purpose was to establish Mao's thought as the sole authoritative interpretation of Marxism-Leninism for Chinese conditions.
2. Officials and intellectuals were required to study documents selected by Mao and write self-criticisms acknowledging errors. Those who refused or were judged insufficiently sincere faced re-education.
3. Wang Shiwei, a writer who published essays criticising party elitism in Yan'an, was arrested, and later executed.

1. The Rectification Movement eliminated independent intellectual voices and centralised ideological authority in Mao. The movement also consolidated Mao Zedong Thought as the official ideology of the CCP: a resolution passed in 1945 declared it the ‘correct’ application of Marxism-Leninism to Chinese conditions. This was a significant break from the Comintern era, when Soviet authority had been the ultimate reference point.
2. Edgar Snow's Red Star Over China (1937), based on interviews with Mao and other CCP leaders in Yan'an, brought the base area to international attention.
3. Snow's largely sympathetic portrait was read widely in the West and helped build the image of the CCP as a disciplined, genuinely popular movement committed to anti-Japanese resistance.

Evaluating Mao's Leadership at Yan'an

1. Yan'an enabled Mao to turn military leadership into ideological and organisational supremacy. The relative security of the base gave the CCP time to train cadres, expand administration, and define a common political line.
2. Rectification combined education with discipline. Study campaigns promoted Mao's interpretation of Marxism, while criticism and investigation placed pressure on members whose loyalties or ideas were questioned.

1. The mass line connected leadership to rural society in theory and practice. Cadres were expected to learn local conditions and translate party goals into policies that peasants could support.
2. Moderated land and tax policies during the anti-Japanese war helped the CCP widen alliances. This flexibility distinguished immediate wartime strategy from the more radical redistribution associated with other phases.
3. Mao's authority was not based on ideas alone. Control over appointments, military prestige, party education, and the definition of correct doctrine reinforced one another.
4. Yan'an was therefore both a base of resistance and a model of party rule. It expanded participation among supporters while concentrating decisive authority within a disciplined communist organisation.

1. Yan'an fused survival, ideology, and organisation into a single system: by 1945 the CCP had a doctrine, a disciplined cadre corps, and a leader whose authority rested on all three at once.
