The Long March: Survival, Sacrifice, and the Making of a Myth

1. The Long March was not a strategic retreat: it was a desperate flight. When the Red Army broke out of Jiangxi in October 1934, it had no fixed destination and no guarantee of survival.
2. Over the following year, around 80,000-100,000 troops traversed some of the most difficult terrain in China: mountain ranges, rivers, swamps, and the high-altitude grasslands of the Tibetan plateau. The journey covered roughly 9,000 kilometres.
3. Of those who began, an estimated 7,000-8,000 survived to reach Yan'an in northern Shaanxi in October 1935. The rest were killed in combat, died from exhaustion or disease, fell into rivers, or deserted. It was a catastrophe by any conventional military measure.
4. But in one critical respect the Long March succeeded: it preserved the CCP leadership. The march sorted out who would lead the party for the next generation. It also created the conditions for the Zunyi Conference, the most important political meeting in CCP history before 1949.

Zunyi Conference: Mao Takes Control

1. In January 1935, while paused in the town of Zunyi in Guizhou province, the CCP leadership held an emergency meeting. The Zunyi Conference is often described as the moment Mao Zedong rose to real power. More precisely, it was the moment the Comintern's influence over the CCP's military strategy was broken.
2. Mao and his allies, including Zhou Enlai, who switched his support to Mao, mounted a devastating critique of the strategy that had led to the failure of the fifth encirclement campaign.
3. They blamed Li De (Otto Braun), the Comintern adviser, for insisting on positional warfare that the Red Army could not win.
4. The conference stripped Li De of military command and appointed Mao to the newly created position of member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo, effectively placing him in charge of military decisions.
5. The decision saved the Long March. Mao returned to mobile guerrilla tactics, repeatedly manoeuvring to avoid encirclement and keep the army intact.
6. The famous crossing of the Luding Bridge in May 1935, a chain bridge over the Dadu River, reportedly captured under fire by Red Army soldiers crawling across its bare chains, became one of the Long March's central heroic episodes.

Long March and Zunyi Conference: Causation, Limits, and Historical Debate

1. The Long March was first a strategic retreat from military defeat. The CCP lost territory and people, and survival depended on escaping the encirclement that had made the Jiangxi base untenable.
2. Zunyi mattered because it altered authority within the party during crisis. Criticism of earlier military decisions strengthened Mao's position, although his dominance developed further after the conference rather than appearing fully formed at once.

1. Geography and local resistance shaped the route. The marchers faced difficult terrain, hostile armies, supply shortages, and political uncertainty, which makes later heroic narratives incomplete.
2. The arrival in the northwest gave the CCP a defensible base and access to the anti-Japanese cause. Survival allowed a military disaster to be reinterpreted as proof of discipline and revolutionary purpose.
3. Memory became a political resource. The party used shared sacrifice to define leadership credentials, loyalty, and the legitimacy of the veteran core.
4. The strongest judgement separates immediate and later significance. The march was a costly escape in 1934 and 1935, but it became a foundation of Mao's authority and CCP identity.
