The Xi'an Incident: China's Reluctant United Front

1. By late 1936, Jiang Jieshi was still pursuing his fifth anti-communist campaign even as Japanese pressure on northern China intensified.
2. His own generals were frustrated. The Northeast Army, which had been forced to abandon Manchuria in 1931 without fighting, wanted to return and retake their homeland. They had no interest in killing Chinese communists while Japan occupied their province.
3. On 12 December 1936, generals Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng, commanding forces supposed to be fighting the CCP, kidnapped Jiang Jieshi at his headquarters near Xi'an.
4. They presented him with demands: end the civil war, form a united front against Japan, release political prisoners, and allow popular mass organisations.
5. The CCP leadership, including Zhou Enlai, flew to Xi'an to participate in negotiations. Stalin also urged the CCP not to execute Jiang: the Soviet Union needed a unified Chinese front to keep Japan occupied and away from Soviet borders.

1. After two weeks of negotiation, Jiang agreed to stop anti-communist campaigns in exchange for his release. He returned to Nanjing without publicly signing any agreement.

Marco Polo Bridge and Full-Scale War

1. On 7 July 1937, Japanese and Chinese troops exchanged fire near the Marco Polo Bridge (Lugou Bridge) outside Beijing. The incident, sparked by a Japanese soldier who went missing during night exercises, escalated rapidly. Japan used it as a pretext for a full military offensive.
2. Within weeks, Japanese forces had seized Beijing and Tianjin. By December 1937, they had captured Shanghai (after brutal fighting) and advanced on the capital Nanjing.
3. Jiang Jieshi formally announced the Second United Front in September 1937. The CCP's forces were nominally integrated into the National Revolutionary Army as the Eighth Route Army in the north and the New Fourth Army in central China.
4. In practice, the Second United Front was fragile from the start. The GMD and CCP fought few joint operations, and both sides suspected the other of conserving forces for the post-war struggle.
5. The New Fourth Army Incident (January 1941) exposed how thin the alliance had become: GMD forces ambushed a New Fourth Army column, killing thousands, effectively ending military cooperation.
6. The two parties remained nominally allied but fought essentially separate wars.

Xi'an Incident and the Second United Front: Causation, Limits, and Historical Debate

1. The Xi'an Incident forced a change in priorities rather than creating genuine trust between the GMD and CCP. Zhang Xueliang's detention of Jiang made continued civil war politically harder to defend amid Japanese expansion.
2. Jiang's release preserved his leadership, while negotiations opened the way to the Second United Front. The settlement depended on compromise because none of the participants could impose a complete solution.
3. The Marco Polo Bridge fighting in July 1937 transformed pressure for unity into full-scale war. Japanese escalation made resistance a test of national legitimacy for both parties.
4. Cooperation remained limited. The GMD retained formal state leadership and bore much of the conventional fighting, while the CCP protected its organisation and expanded influence behind Japanese lines.
5. The united front changed the political environment even where military coordination was weak. It allowed the CCP to present itself as a patriotic national force and constrained Jiang's ability to focus exclusively on communist suppression.
6. The strongest judgement treats Xi'an as an important catalyst within a larger crisis. Japanese aggression created the need for unity, while the incident compelled leaders to act on that need.
