Platt Amendment (1901)
A US congressional amendment incorporated into Cuba's constitution that gave the USA the right to intervene in Cuban affairs, required Cuba to lease naval bases to the USA, and vetoed Cuba's ability to sign treaties with other powers or incur debts beyond a certain level. It made Cuba nominally independent but functionally a US protectorate, and remained in force until 1934.
Spanish-American War (1898)
A conflict fought in 1898 between the United States and Spain, centred on Cuba but extending to Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. It ended Spanish colonial rule in these areas and created a new American overseas empire.
