Belief Systems Gave Expansion Moral Cover

Manifest Destiny Beyond the Continent

1. Manifest Destiny originally justified continental expansion. In the 1840s, it presented westward settlement as both inevitable and providential.
2. The 1890 census declared the frontier closed. Expansionists feared that a central source of national growth and identity had disappeared.
3. Frederick Jackson Turner gave the frontier historical importance. His 1893 thesis argued that western expansion had shaped American democracy and individualism.
4. Political writers redirected the idea overseas. Hawaii, the Caribbean, and the Pacific were described as new frontiers for national energy.
5. The analogy made empire appear familiar. Overseas expansion could be presented as a continuation of national history rather than a new colonial departure.
6. The analogy also concealed important differences. Pacific and Caribbean societies were already populated and possessed their own governments, identities, and political claims.
7. Manifest Destiny supplied direction rather than a detailed policy. Leaders still had to choose where, when, and how the United States would expand.

Anglo Saxonism and Social Darwinism

5. The ideology transformed conquest into progress. Expansion was portrayed as the advance of civilization rather than the denial of sovereignty.
6. Racial hierarchy influenced colonial administration. Officials doubted whether Filipinos and other subject peoples were ready for immediate self government.
7. The claims were political constructions, not scientific truths. They legitimized unequal power and connected overseas empire with racism inside the United States.

The Civilising Mission and Missionary Paternalism

1. Missionaries built long standing overseas networks. Churches supported schools, medical work, translation, and conversion in Asia, the Pacific, and Latin America.

Sea Power, National Greatness, and the Strenuous Life

1. Alfred Thayer Mahan made power an ideological goal. He argued that naval strength, commerce, bases, and maritime reach marked great nations.
2. Mahan drew lessons from European empires. The United States should compete for influence or risk weakness in a world of rival powers.
3. Theodore Roosevelt celebrated the strenuous life. He claimed that individuals and nations required effort, danger, and responsibility to avoid decline.
4. Masculine language strengthened expansionist arguments. Military action was associated with courage, discipline, maturity, and national regeneration.
5. Isolation was portrayed as weakness. Advocates insisted that a modern industrial state could not remain detached from global competition.
6. Strategic and ideological arguments reinforced each other. Fleets and bases were practical instruments as well as symbols of national status.
7. National greatness did not require annexation in every case. Diplomatic pressure, intervention, canal control, and naval presence could also demonstrate power.

Humanitarianism and the Language of Liberation

1. Cuban suffering gave intervention a moral claim. Reports of Spanish reconcentration camps and famine produced genuine public concern.
