Canada and the League of Nations

Canada as a Founding Member

1. Canada joined the League in 1920. Its separate membership followed the precedent established by its signature on the Treaty of Versailles.
2. Membership marked growing international status. Canada could speak and vote in Geneva apart from Britain, even though imperial ties remained strong.
3. Prime Minister Robert Borden sought recognition. He argued that Canada's wartime sacrifice entitled it to representation in post-war diplomacy.
4. The League promised collective security. Members were expected to resist aggression through consultation, sanctions, and possibly military action.

Article X and the Limits of Commitment

From League Membership to Legal Autonomy
