The Jiangxi Soviet: Land Reform and Rural Power

1. After the failed uprisings of 1927, Mao Zedong and military commander Zhu De established a base in the remote Jinggang Mountains straddling the Hunan-Jiangxi border. In 1930 they moved the base to central Jiangxi, where it became the Central Soviet Area, officially proclaimed in November 1931 as the Chinese Soviet Republic.
2. Mao was named chairman. The base governed an estimated 3 million people at its peak. The Soviet's key policy was land reform: the CCP confiscated land from landlords and wealthy peasants and redistributed it to poor peasants and landless labourers.
3. For millions of Chinese peasants, this was a transformative experience: they received land they had worked for generations. It built genuine popular support for the CCP in areas under its control.
4. The Red Army's military strategy in the Jiangxi period was developed by Mao and Zhu De. Their guerrilla tactics were summarised in a slogan: “The enemy advances, we retreat; the enemy halts, we harass; the enemy tires, we attack; the enemy retreats, we pursue.”
5. The Red Army avoided direct confrontation with superior GMD forces, luring them deep into unfamiliar territory before striking.

Five Encirclement Campaigns: From Guerrilla Success to Forced Retreat

1. Jiang Jieshi launched five successive Encirclement Campaigns against the Jiangxi Soviet between 1930 and 1934. The first three (1930, 1931, 1932) and the fourth (1932-1933) all failed.
2. The Red Army's guerrilla tactics drew GMD columns into difficult terrain, cut off their supply lines, and destroyed them piecemeal. The first campaign used 100,000 troops, and all four were defeated.
3. The fifth campaign (1933-1934) was different. Advised by German military expert Hans von Seeckt, Jiang built a network of thousands of blockhouses around the Jiangxi perimeter, slowly constricting the Soviet area.
4. Comintern military adviser Li De (Otto Braun) overruled Mao's guerrilla strategy and insisted on positional warfare, defending fixed lines against the GMD advance. The Red Army was not equipped for this kind of fighting and suffered severe losses.

1. By October 1934, the Jiangxi Soviet was collapsing. Food and ammunition were running short, and the Red Army had lost a significant portion of its strength. The CCP leadership decided to break out.
2. On the night of 16 October 1934, around 80,000-100,000 troops slipped through a weak point in the GMD blockade and began the journey that would become known as the Long March.

Evaluating the Jiangxi Soviet and Encirclement Campaigns

1. The Jiangxi Soviet tested whether the CCP could turn rural mobilisation into a durable revolutionary government. Land redistribution, taxation, recruitment, and local administration linked social reform to military survival.
2. Mao's strategy relied on mobility, local intelligence, and peasant support. Earlier encirclement campaigns failed because Red Army forces avoided decisive confrontation and attacked isolated units.

1. The fifth campaign altered those conditions. Blockhouses, economic pressure, and tighter coordination reduced the space available for manoeuvre, while the CCP leadership adopted more rigid defensive methods.
2. Failure resulted from both Nationalist adaptation and communist error: the GMD improved containment, but the CCP also abandoned tactics suited to its weaker material position. The Soviet's importance cannot be measured only by territorial survival. It gave communist leaders experience in land policy, administration, discipline, and the political management of a rural army.
3. The defeat forced the Long March, yet it did not end the revolution. Skills developed in Jiangxi travelled with the survivors and shaped the later base at Yan'an.

1. The Jiangxi years show a proto-state built on land reform and guerrilla mobility, undone only when material blockade and a change in military doctrine deprived the Red Army of the mobile war it had mastered.
