The Shanghai Massacre: Jiang Jieshi Turns on the CCP

1. By early 1927 the Northern Expedition had transformed the military balance of power in China. The National Revolutionary Army controlled central and eastern China, and Nanjing and Shanghai were within reach. But the alliance between the GMD and the CCP was under enormous strain: the closer the Nationalists came to victory, the more incompatible their goals appeared.
2. CCP activists had spent the Northern Expedition organising workers and peasants along the army's route. In cities like Shanghai, general strikes coordinated by communist unions had already seized control of large areas before GMD troops arrived, while in the countryside peasant associations were seizing land from landlords. GMD conservatives, backed by Shanghai's financiers and merchants, were alarmed: this was not the kind of social order they had fought to create.
3. On 12 April 1927, Jiang Jieshi acted. In the early morning hours, members of Du Yuesheng's Green Gang criminal syndicate, backed by French Concession police and Jiang's troops, attacked CCP workers and union members across Shanghai. Thousands were killed in the city, and in subsequent massacres in Guangzhou, Wuhan, and other cities over the following weeks.

Consequences: The CCP Retreats to the Countryside

1. The massacre destroyed the CCP's urban labour movement. Chen Duxiu, the party's founding General Secretary, was forced to resign and was subsequently expelled from the party. Moscow blamed him for following a strategy of subordination to the GMD rather than maintaining communist independence.
2. Surviving CCP members faced a choice: go underground in the cities, flee abroad, or head for the countryside. Several attempted urban uprisings, in Nanchang (August 1927), Changsha (September 1927), and Guangzhou (December 1927), all failed. The Nanchang Uprising, led by commanders including Zhu De and Zhou Enlai, is commemorated as the founding of the People's Liberation Army.
3. Mao Zedong drew a different conclusion. His essay “Report on an Investigation of the Peasant Movement in Hunan” (1927) had already argued that Chinese peasants were a revolutionary force capable of sweeping away landlordism. After the massacre, Mao led a failed Autumn Harvest Uprising in Hunan (September 1927) but survived to establish a base in the Jinggang Mountains on the Hunan-Jiangxi border.

Evaluating the Collapse of the First United Front

1. The massacre ended cooperation because Jiang concluded that organised communism threatened his control of the nationalist revolution, and urban labour mobilisation made that conflict immediate in Shanghai. Business interests, criminal networks, and sections of the GMD right supported the repression, showing that the purge was rooted in a coalition of political and social interests rather than one personal decision alone.

1. The CCP suffered a catastrophic urban defeat. The loss pushed surviving communists toward rural bases, where land reform and armed organisation became central to a different revolutionary strategy. The collapse also divided the nationalist movement: Jiang secured command of the Nanjing government, but the violence narrowed its claim to represent a broad anti-imperialist coalition.
2. The key turning point was therefore both organisational and ideological. The purge destroyed the First United Front while clarifying that the GMD and CCP offered incompatible routes to national unification. Its long-term significance lies in the civil war it accelerated: Shanghai strengthened Jiang in the short term, but helped create the rural communist movement that later challenged GMD rule.
