Experiences of Marginalized Groups during the First World War

African American Military Service

1. About 380,000 Black men served. The armed forces remained segregated and most Black soldiers were assigned to labour and support units.
2. The 92nd and 93rd Divisions fought overseas. Their experiences differed because parts of the 93rd served under French command.
3. The 369th Infantry gained distinction. The Harlem Hellfighters spent extensive time in combat and received French recognition.
4. White officers often questioned Black ability. Racist assumptions limited training, promotion, equipment, and combat assignments.
5. Black officers trained at Fort Des Moines. Their commissions represented an achievement within a segregated military structure.
6. Service encouraged claims to full citizenship. Black leaders argued that sacrifice abroad should produce equal rights at home.
7. The promise was not fulfilled. Returning veterans encountered segregation, humiliation, racial violence, and lynching.

The Great Migration

1. Wartime labour demand encouraged movement north. Reduced European immigration and military production created industrial vacancies.
2. More than 500,000 African Americans migrated. They moved from the South to cities including Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, New York, and Philadelphia.
3. The Chicago Defender promoted departure. Its reporting advertised jobs and directly challenged Jim Crow oppression.
4. Migrants sought more than wages. Voting access, education, family security, and escape from racial violence shaped decisions.
5. Northern discrimination restricted opportunity. Residential segregation, workplace ceilings, and exclusion from some unions remained powerful.
6. Black institutions expanded. Churches, newspapers, businesses, clubs, and political organizations grew with urban communities.
7. Migration changed national politics. Black voters became increasingly influential in northern cities and later national party competition.

Racial Violence and the Red Summer

1. White resistance followed demographic change. Competition over housing, employment, public space, and political influence fuelled hostility.
2. East St. Louis erupted in 1917. White mobs killed Black residents and destroyed homes during severe racial violence.
3. The Red Summer spread in 1919. More than two dozen cities experienced riots and attacks after the war.
4. Chicago endured prolonged violence. The killing of Eugene Williams after he crossed an informal beach boundary triggered days of conflict.
5. Black communities organized self-defence. Veterans and residents resisted attacks rather than accepting violence without response.
6. Federal protection was limited. Local police and officials often tolerated white mobs or treated Black resistance as the main threat.
7. Violence exposed wartime hypocrisy. A government claiming to defend democracy abroad failed to guarantee safety and equality at home.

Native American Service and Citizenship

1. About 12,000 Native Americans served. Many volunteered even though a large proportion did not possess United States citizenship.
2. Service motives varied. Patriotism, warrior traditions, wages, community obligations, and individual choice all influenced enlistment.
3. Native languages had military value. Choctaw speakers helped transmit secure battlefield messages during the Meuse-Argonne offensive.
4. Communities supported bond and relief campaigns. Their participation occurred despite poverty, land loss, and federal control.
5. The Indian Citizenship Act followed in 1924. Military service contributed to support for citizenship but was not the only cause.
6. Citizenship did not ensure voting rights. Several states continued to block Native American voters through legal and administrative barriers.
7. Assimilation pressure persisted. Boarding schools and federal policy sought cultural conformity while celebrating selective wartime service.

Mexican and Mexican American Workers

1. Mexican migration increased during the war. Employers recruited workers as European immigration declined and military service reduced labour supply.
2. Workers entered strategic industries. They laboured in agriculture, railways, mining, construction, meatpacking, and urban factories.
3. The border remained selectively open. Officials waived some immigration requirements when employers demanded labour.
4. Wages could exceed those in Mexico. But workers faced dangerous jobs, poor housing, wage theft, and racial segregation.
5. Mexican American communities grew outside the Southwest. Railway and industrial work encouraged settlement in cities such as Chicago and Kansas City.
6. Acceptance depended on economic need. Workers welcomed during shortages could later face deportation campaigns and exclusion.
7. Wartime migration deepened long-term ties. Family networks and labour routes connected Mexico and the United States beyond the armistice.

German Americans and Wartime Nativism

1. German Americans became objects of suspicion. Their language, associations, schools, churches, and newspapers were portrayed as potential disloyalty.
2. Public use of German declined sharply. States and local authorities restricted instruction while communities renamed organizations and events.
3. Cultural symbols were targeted. German foods, music, books, and street names were altered or removed from public life.
4. Robert Prager was lynched in 1918. A mob in Illinois killed the German-born miner after accusing him of disloyalty.
5. The killers were acquitted. The verdict demonstrated how patriotic hysteria could protect mob violence.
6. Citizenship offered limited protection. Long residence or naturalization did not prevent surveillance, humiliation, or forced loyalty displays.
7. Wartime assimilation had lasting effects. Many German American institutions never regained their previous public visibility.

Immigrants, Radicals, and Conscientious Objectors

1. The Espionage and Sedition Acts targeted dissent. Immigrant newspapers, socialist speakers, and anti-war organizers faced censorship and prosecution.
2. The IWW suffered federal raids. Its immigrant and migrant membership made the union especially vulnerable to claims of foreign radicalism.
3. The American Protective League policed loyalty. Volunteers checked draft cards, reported neighbours, and participated in raids.
4. Conscientious objectors faced punishment. Some received alternative service, while others were imprisoned, abused, or forced into military structures.
5. Religious minorities experienced pressure. Mennonites, Quakers, Hutterites, and other peace churches defended opposition grounded in faith.
6. The First Red Scare extended wartime repression. The Palmer Raids arrested thousands and deported selected foreign-born radicals.
7. Marginalization linked race, nationality, and politics. Groups became vulnerable when officials defined difference as evidence of disloyalty or danger.

Violence and Displacement on the Home Front

1. The Houston Riot exposed the dangers Black soldiers faced. In 1917, members of the all-Black Twenty-Fourth Infantry clashed with police and civilians in Houston after months of racist treatment, leading to the largest court-martial in U.S. Army history and the execution of nineteen soldiers.
2. The Bisbee Deportation targeted striking Mexican and immigrant miners. In 1917, a vigilante posse forcibly removed roughly 1,300 striking copper miners, many of them Mexican American, from Bisbee, Arizona, and abandoned them in the desert without trial.
3. Native American service did not guarantee full citizenship. Despite thousands serving in the war, most Native Americans did not gain automatic U.S. citizenship until the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, and many still faced restrictions on voting afterward.
4. German-language institutions were dismantled under wartime pressure. German-language newspapers closed, schools stopped teaching German, and some communities renamed streets and foods to remove visible German associations.
5. Historians debate whether wartime service advanced or delayed equality. Some argue military service built a stronger case for later civil rights claims, while others emphasize how quickly wartime gains were reversed once the war ended.
