Economic and Social Impact of the Second World War on the United States

Converting the Economy for War

1. Pearl Harbor accelerated conversion. Factories shifted from civilian goods to aircraft, ships, vehicles, weapons, uniforms, and military supplies.
2. The War Production Board set priorities. It allocated scarce materials, restricted civilian production, and coordinated contracts across industries.
3. The Office of War Mobilization strengthened control. Created in 1943, it helped resolve conflicts among agencies, firms, labour, and the armed forces.
4. Automobile production was redirected. Major car companies produced tanks, trucks, aircraft engines, and other military equipment.
5. New industrial regions expanded. The West Coast, Gulf Coast, and South gained shipyards, aircraft factories, bases, and processing plants.

The Arsenal of Democracy

Finance, Taxation, Rationing, and Prices
